Aloha Pamela,

I used a gift card to complete a purchase at Foodland Beretania, but was short 69 cents. I apologized to the cashier and asked if I could return an item. But the nice cashier took out her own money to pay for the shortage. Her name tag was printed with Bernice. I really thought this was a special act of kindness. I told her I would return and pay her back. When I did, she kindly refused. I really appreciate her courtesy and exceptional kindness. Foodland Beretania is to be commended for hiring staff who perform such excellent customer service. I’ve become a loyal customer of that store even though it’s out of my way.

Dear Hudson,

“Bernice Harris is like that with every customer,” says Foodland Beretania manager J.R. Oshiro-Koanui. “She’s been here for two years and treats all her customers like family.”

Dear Pamela,

We read your column every week and decided to give APPLAUSE to the EZ Roadside guy who offered his help when we had car problems. We were all

frightened with this first-time experience but were relieved when help came. Thank you sooooo much. And God bless you.

Araceli Navarro

Dear Araceli,

Your angel was Harris Manaea, who’s worked for EZ roadside for a year. “I love my job,” he says. “It’s great to see smiles on people’s faces when you send them on their way. I remember seeing this couple in the car. I was on my way home and I was tired and hungry, but you know, you gotta help, yeah? That could be my parents or my sister stuck on the highway.”

Aloha Pamela,

I would like to send some big APPLAUSE to agent Lisa Q. Antonio, group sales coordinator for Farmers Insurance Hawaii. She helped me with a claim. Because of her diligence and expertise, we won the claim. About a week later, I received a card from her thanking me for my patience in the matter and in the card she gave me gas certificates. My daughter took the certificates but noticed they had expired. I called Lisa the next day to thank her and apologize for not using the certificates before the expiration date. A couple of days later there it was, another thank you card with new gas certificates. That is going above and beyond the call of duty! Mahalo plenty, Lisa!

Lynn Splater

Dear Lynn,

Lisa Antonio thanks you for your patience in the matter. “She was calm throughout the process,” she says. “I handle roadside issues that need extra consideration. I wanted this resolved quickly because I try to put myself in the client’s shoes. She was so nice so I thought gas certificates would be appropriate. We all need gas, right?”
