Aloha Pamela,

Lucky we live Hawaii! Please help me to thank three gentlemen who came to my assistance recently. On my way home from teaching summer school at Kainalu Elementary School, I realized that I was riding on a flat tire. I pulled over and parked in front of a residence on North Kalaheo Drive in Kailua and tried to contact my husband to come to help me. Unable to locate him and feeling pretty anxious about my predicament, I was relieved when a young man named Troy and his friend came out of the house I was parked in front of and inquired if I needed help. Changing the tire was not an easy task, as I didn’t have all of the necessary tools. Imagine our dismay when the tire jack was removed and the spare tire was discovered to be flat! Troy’s neighbor, Mark, was working on top of a roof nearby and offered to inflate the tire with his air compressor. He had to use two extension cords to be able to reach my car’s tire across the street from his house. This allowed me to drive to a tire store, where I was able to have tire No. 3 mounted. These guys took time out of their busy day to help a person in need, and I would like for them to know what a difference their aloha made in my day.

Dear Caroline,

Mark Kretschmer says it was easier for the two of them to remedy the problem than for you to wait for help. “She was standing out there chatting on her cell phone,” he says. “We just filled up her tire in no time. She was very nice. I warned her that her spare tire was empty too.”

Dear Pamela,

I would like to extend a round of APPLAUSE to Calvin Goo, operations manager, and his team at the Sears Distribution Center. My husband and I are remodeling our home in Pearl City and one afternoon I went to Sears to purchase all new appliances, including a stainless steel dishwasher. I picked up my new appliances from the Sears Distribution Center, but when we opened the boxes that evening, we discovered that the dishwasher was a white one. The contractors were scheduled to install the dishwasher soon, so I called Sears to ask if they could deliver the stainless steel dishwasher and pick up the white one. I spoke to several different people, but in the end, Calvin came through and had the correct dishwasher delivered to our house within the hour. So a big gold star and a round of APPLAUSE to Sears - the only place I’ll ever buy appliances from!

Dear Mika,

Calvin Goo says the problem started when the delivery service received the wrong stock number. “It was off by one digit,” he says. “She was very moved that we brought the new dishwasher so quickly. It’s awesome when customers show their appreciation like that.”
