Dear Pamela,

It would inexcusable if the efforts of John O’Malley of Planet Sun in Kailua were not brought to your attention. Incidentally, before going further, I must salute you and MidWeek for the diligence in presenting the APPLAUSE feature every week. Readers truly need that regular positive contribution to help maintain a healthy perspective on this wacky world. Big mahalo for being there.

Now back to Mr. O’Malley. Last May I purchased a Planet Sun UV-protective umbrella for my frequent and lengthy daytime strolls. As I was part of the Honolulu Marathon Clinic’s small contingent of walkers in training, the brolly saw tremendous usage during training.

Unfortunately, a rare malfunction of the opening mechanism led me to ask Mr. O’Malley if this would be covered under the warranty that came with the umbrella. The answer was an unqualified “yes!” I was willing to ship the unit back to him or drive it to him over the Pali, but he personally came all the way to our home in Kaimuki to resolve the situation. A replacement was cheerfully provided, and he even gave me some lip-balm tubes. This all really blew me away. Having worked my entire career in air transport customer service, I am most appreciative when someone willingly goes above and beyond.

Dear Jerry,

John O’Malley, who describes himself as Planet Sun’s owner, chief motivator and lead singer, says it’s just a part of customer service. “We’re a small company nearly two years old, trying to succeed at manufacturing our own products,” he says. “Our mantra to make great stuff and take care of great people.”

Aloha Pamela,

A few weeks ago we took my wife’s parents out for a night at Alan Wong’s. The food and the service were as excellent as ever, and we had a wonderful time. When we got home, there was a message waiting for us from Kristin at Alan Wong’s. It turned out my mother-in-law had dropped her wallet while we were waiting for the valet to get the car! Kristin assured us that it would be locked in their safe overnight and, sure enough, when we retrieved it the next day everything - all cash and cards - was there!

We’d like to nominate the entire staff at Alan Wong’s, from the valet who found the wallet to Kristin who called us and kept it safe, in addition to all the wait staff and chefs, for a big APPLAUSE! Alan Wong’s is a wonderful place to spend an evening, and we can’t wait until our next visit.

Dear Rob,

“I believe that this is what being in the hospitality industry is all about,” says Kristin Alm. “When guests come to dine at our restaurant, I equate it to inviting guests into my own home. The concern and desire to track down the owner of the wallet was a natural instinct. Working here at Alan Wong’s, I have learned to express the feeling of Aloha that our industry is so well-known for.”
