You saw her designer hand bags in MidWeek, now you might see a Gina Alexander bag on the shoulders of Nalani Choy, Lehua Kalima Heine or Angela Morales. The ladies of Na Leo each own one. “Whenever I use the bag, everyone says that’s so cute,” reveals Morales. “The quality of her stuff is really good! I love her bags!” The picture on all three pieces? A photo of Hawaii’s most famous female musical group and their sons, a shot captured and shared on the inside cover of their 20th Anniversary Local Boys CD ... Hau’oli La Hanau to Rhys Namie Yamanoha! The nearly 8-pound bundle of sweetness made her world debut last Wednesday morning much to the delight and anticipation of her proud parents, KHNL sports director Russell Hiroshi Yamanoha and wife Tammy Sumida. “See” how they came up with R-H-Y-S? Mom sent me photos of baby and daddy with an explanation of her obvious absence in all of them: “There are no pictures of me because the only time he’ll (Russ) let me hold her is when I’m breast-feeding.” Baby Rhys joins other famous “dogs” including Andy Roddick and Jennifer Lopez ... More news from the KHNL family, this time from 12-year-old Kasey Rieta, (another year of the dog person). She’s daughter of crime reporter Minna Sugimoto. The Moanalua Middle School seventh-grader will join other student leaders from around the globe in a 10-day People to People Leadership Summit in our nation’s capitol this July. Kasey received the honor through nomination of her teachers based on scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential ... It was a night to remember for nearly 100 guests who gathered in the Round Top home of arts supporters Mark Wong and Guy Merola of Commercial Data Systems.
The two held a spectacular reception benefit last week for Ballet Hawaii as The Three Phantoms stage stars Craig Schulman, Cris Groenendaal and Kevin Gray entertained the crowd accompanied by Sue Anderson on the piano. Later, Mark joined Sue on the duo grand pianos, while Guy, a noted tenor, sang along. New Compadres Bar & Grill general manager, Jim Wagner, was there with Chef Romell Esteves, who prepared the restaurant’s famous salmon tacos ... Making more nighttime memories for the locals are Jed Roa, manager of Pipeline Café and his busy staff. Jed held the first Local Vocal concert of the year. Island 98.5’s Makani acted as host and wore his signature kukui nut lei while All-Natro, Kawao and Koa’uka played to a crowd of 600 fans. Keeping the peace were Pepe Moetulu, PC security director and staff members Paul Arakaki and Rio Tafai. Koa’uka bass player Keahi says he and the rest of his band mates, Bronson, Wes and TC, really appreciate the fans who come out. Among them, Kauai natives Tina Moreno, Charis Castillo and Mia Moriguchi, all on Oahu attending college. Also there, Island 98.5 morning radio chick jock Crystal Akana. She looked like a pretty fashionista in a stylish white shoulder-cutout top and jeans as she enjoyed the music with gal pal Chasity Ah You.
The Local Vocal concert series will play out at Pipeline on the last Saturday of each month featuring various Hawaii bands ... Local girls Corrina Brillon and Akiko Kitehara are making news on another stage. They’re part of the Cirque Hawaii cast performing at the Imax Theatre in Waikiki and the only two who are from the islands. They’ve been performing in front of a full house, filling the place to capacity at 480 ... Another notable islander is Clear Channel Hawaii’s production director John James. He’ll leave CC Feb. 15 to take over duties as 98.5 KLUC’s new imaging and production director. It’ll be his first time living away from Hawaii, but the 22-year-old isn’t worried. “I’m very excited,” he says. “It’s Vegas; I’ll still see everybody.” ... And someone who seems to see everybody is Island 98.5 morning radio co-host Lanai. The radio vet enjoyed some well-deserved time off, making a trip to the island by the same name. He rubbed shoulders with hip-hop great Dr. Dre, former Punky Brewster star Soleil Moon Fre, and Everybody Loves Raymond‘s Ray Romano during his stay at the Koele Lodge. When asked about Romano, Lanai says he’s just a normal guy who enjoys time with his family ... Speaking of family, and taking the op for a personal blonde highlight - Lost fans who watch the Wednesday night hit on ABC can keep an eye out for my brother, Kaniala Makaula, who plays a soldier in Sayid (Naveen Andrews) flashbacks ...
