SO WHAT did you get your mom for Mother’s Day? Comedian Augie Tulba says he got his mom a “Z-String” because a G-String won’t fit her large Portuguese derriere. Augie says his mom knows to expect strange gifts from him every year. “She only laughs,” he says. Along with the “Z-String,” Augie bought his mother the traditional flowers, a year’s subscription to Playgirl and Redondo’s Portuguese sausages. As for Augie’s lovely wife, Kim, he bought a Louis Vuitton bag, the real deal, of course. He says “there’s nothing like a Louis Vuitton bag to hide the misery of not having a husband around all the time.” ... Augie has been on the road a lot with shows on the Neighbor Islands and on the Mainland. Just last week he had three sold-out shows, two on Kona last Friday and one on Maui Saturday. He performed two shows Sunday with Na Leo Pilimehana right here at the Sheraton Waikiki. The busy funny man has a deal to perform shows in all other Sheraton properties, and he’s secured gigs on the Mainland including San Diego and San Francisco in July. His next big project, he says, will be the filming of his next DVD, tentatively titled Then & Now, on Aug. 15 at the Farrington High School auditorium. So watch out for that; it should be a great show. The audience is one of the planned highlights of the DVD.
There will be a pre-show Red Carpet event that will feature audience members and possibly big name celebrities. Audience members trying to make their way to the auditorium entrance will have to make their way down the red carpet, which will be lined with photographers and a couple of tuxedo-clad reporters. Folks will be interviewed just like celebrities are at movie premieres and award shows; fancy attire will be optional ... Louis Vuitton bags seemed to be the popular gift for Mother’s Day. Hot 93.9 radio personality and comedian Gregg Hammer also bought one for his wife, Shawnee, to show his appreciation for her being a great mom to their kids. Gregg took his mother out to lunch Saturday and then treated his mother-in-law and Shawnee to lunch Sunday and a shopping spree afterward ... As for KSSK news director Damian Balinowski,he took the semi-homemade approach for Mother’s Day. He got up early to bake croissants for his lovely wife, Honorata. OK, it wasn’t totally from scratch, it was the ready-made Pillsbury Doughboy kind, but it’s the thought that counts, right? He served the freshly baked croissants with preserves. They, along with their daughter Megan, spent a quiet morning at home, enjoying the croissants while sipping coffee in their special mugs fashioned with tastefully nude art that they purchased on a trip in Germany.
The Balinowskis are originally from Poland, and from time to time visit their home-land and make stops in other European countries along the way. Megan also made a special gift for Mother’s Day: refrigerator magnets, including one with “#1 mom” written on it. As for Damian’s mom, she flew in from Canada the evening of Mother’s Day, along with his sister. He enlisted the help of his sister to make Mom breakfast the following day, since he knew they would be too tired from their long plane trip here. ... Shame, shame, shame on KSSK traffic reporter Jason Yotsuda. He forgot all about Mother’s Day. He says he forgot that it was this past weekend. His mom lives on Kauai, but she was just here on Oahu last Thursday visiting him and left last Saturday. He felt bad, and says he’d call her. Maybe he could make it up by getting her jewelry, like he did last year, or a fancy Louis Vuitton bag ...
