“Surprise!” Nearly 100 guests screamed the word as KCCN FM 100 morning radio host Billy V (aka Bill Van Osdol) walked into what he thought was another gig he was hired to emcee at The Willows. With a huge smile, a jaw that hit the floor and a look of OMG!, Billy V. quickly realized that his family and friends had successfully pulled off his own “birthday ambush.” Fellow morning jam host Lina Girl playfully teased her radio partner as she told the crowd not to be surprised if Billy grabbed the mic and emceed his own party! Music by the men of Na Kama - Brian Mersberg, Danny Naipo and Eric Lee - kept spirits high. A hula by Halau Kalikopuaokalaniakea and a song by Lina Girl lent to the happy celebration. I had the best seat in the house when Lina took the stage - right next to her husband.

There could have been nothing better than listening to the songstress sing Sweet Someone while also getting an earful of Braddah Sam (one of three from the group Vaihi) singing along with his wife - chicken-skin and a special duet for those within range. A little later, Billy did grab the mic for a royal rendition of Fools Rush In.

The King was definitely in the house! Other radio folks highlighting the evening included Braddah Bryan, J-Irie, Robz Yamane, Spike on the mic, Sista Sherry and Uncle Sam Kapu. UH sports fans would have also recognized party guest Artie Wilson ... And here’s a corrective Blonde Highlight - e kala mai ia’u to all you Birthday Bashers! KCCN’s annual concert is the last Friday and Saturday of this month. Not last month as I excitedly (yet mistakenly) reported. That weekend’s been marked on my July calendar since May - duh! ... Another event on the calendar is Franz Harary‘s Mega Magic at Hawaii Theatre. That happens tomorrow (Saturday) and next weekend too. I’m sure fellow MidWeek columnist Uncle Tom Moffatt will have more on this special show for the entire ‘ohana. ...

Over the weekend, I had a chance to talk story with Junior Kekuewa Jr. You’ve heard the multi-talented entertainer on 93.9’s morning show with Rory Wild and the Wake-Up Crew and also in the afternoon with Hot’s Pablo Sato. JKJ now has his own show at The Deep Blue Supper Club at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki. Folks who stop by on Wednesday nights will get to see Junior along with comedian David Lee, hula by Keaolani and Mahealani, and island music by Sam Spencer. ... With a show that’s opening, there always seems to be one that’s closing as well - er, maybe just temporarily (we hope). I’m talking about the show put on by the group Temporary Lovers. Drummer Numero Bruno (aka Steve) made his last live performance at Detox in downtown recently. Bruno packed his bags and said aloha to our island state. His departure could make for a sick reunion performance sometime in the future ...
