ALOHA KAUA! Some of you might not have noticed, but I’ve been away on vacation for the last few weeks. For those of you who did notice, mahalo for all of your e-mails - it’s always nice to know that you’re thought of, and even missed. Before I answer the question posed by some of you who asked what I did and where I traveled to, let me share a few FYIs I collected while I’ve been away ... Men, here’s a hint: You can’t go wrong with something in a little (or big) blue box. Margie and Rafael Jacinta made a stop at the Waikiki event along with radio broadcast buddies Alicia Lee and Derin Derego. Also there were Leanna Haisen, Sydney Fasi and Christa Wittmier. ... There’s more on the holiday front in terms of food. My family often opts to venture out for Christmas dinner, so when I heard about the spread that Chef Chih-Chieh Chang of Shanghai Bistro is presenting this year, I had to mention it here. Big appetites are sure to be satisfied with more than 50 items on the buffet line. I still don’t know where the Makaula clan will be eating on Dec. 24, but this is definitely up for consideration. The restaurant will be open Dec. 24 and 25 as well as on New Year’s Eve and Jan. 1. ...

After all of the Thanksgiving grub and the holiday food yet to come, I’m sure there are many who are thinking about exercise and the Honolulu Marathon that kicks off on Sunday morning. Jake Shimabukuro is slated to run the marathon along with an estimated 29,000 participants! Media wonder Pat Bigold told me that Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa will be at the starting line, and there are plans for at least three other Hollywood stars to be on hand for marathon festivities too. ... Also on Sunday, shoppers at Ward Warehouse can enjoy a free concert, part of the ongoing Na Mele Nei Concert series. Recent MidWeek cover story subject Brittni Paiva performs on stage with Gordon Mark at 1 p.m. ...

I’ll be there with friends to watch and listen to the band play in a smoke-free atmosphere at T-Spot. ... Finally, here are a couple of personal highlights about my vacation. I had the fabulous opp to see one of the most spectacular views in the world - yes, a bold statement, but it’s for real - atop the 64th floor of the Sky Bar in Lebua Tower in Bangkok, Thailand, at sunset. Exquisitely beautiful! And while I didn’t ride in a tuk-tuk, I did ride on the back of an elephant. Hau’oli la hanau, Dr. Ken. Thank you for celebrating your day abroad!
