Sounds like an interesting movie title, huh? Well, not quite a movie (yet), but certainly a dream come true when Pacific Focus Inc. and Lewis and Montgomery LLC entered into a merger agreement to become 1013 (pronounced 10-13), the only fully integrated branding and production company in Hawaii.

The year 2008 marked my 15th year at Pacific Focus Inc., where I’ve been leading a team of production professionals as president and executive producer. Founded in 1976 by director of photography Dennis Burns, Pacific Focus Inc. is an award-winning, full-service film and high-definition video production company and sound-stage studio facility that has served the television, film and advertising industries on a local and national level for clients such as ABC Television, NIKE, HBO and the NFL.

Having been with the company for nearly half its existence, I’ve been here to experience multiple technology and personnel changes, and managed to adapt our company’s business throughout. But for the last couple of years, I started to see more radical changes in industry trends, particularly in advertising, which made me begin to think about our future in the marketplace.

It wasn’t enough to keep upto-date on the technology anymore. Technology was transforming the ways businesses talk to consumers, as well as our role in the process. Although television, radio and print advertisements are still the standard, I noticed the Internet creating so many new ways for a company to reach its audience. I felt we needed to rethink our approach, and diversification was the key to our success.

Ironically, as I was rethinking the future of our company, an opportunity was presented that would require us to increase our creative capabilities. This provided the catalyst we needed to diversify and create a totally different kind of company. Subsequently, talks began with Lewis and Montgomery, a local branding company, about how we could collaborate on the projects the client was requesting. Ultimately, this led to a more formal arrangement, 1013.

Although Lewis and Montgomery LLC was established less than a year ago, its award-winning core team has been inspiring companies to achieve greater heights for a combined 25-plus years. Its founding members worked at some of the most celebrated advertising agencies on the Mainland and in Hawaii, including Milici Valenti Ng Pack. They have helped organizations such as Minute Maid, Disney, Bank of America, Hawaiian Telcom and the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau develop into brands that people actually care about.

And now, as Hawaii’s first truly integrated branding and production company, we offer clients creative and strategic branding expertise as well as strong production capabilities. The integration of production and branding not only provides cost savings to clients, but it also makes the planning and strategic process more streamlined. It gives us the flexibility to come up with customized, innovative solutions because we have everyone right here in the same building.

I’m proud that our company has been able to meet the changing needs of our clients and the volatility of the economy.
