“Our mission at Aveda is to care for the world we live in, from the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society. At Aveda, we strive to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility, not just in the world of beauty, but around the world,” said founder Horst Rechelbacher.

This mission statement is something we take very seriously here at Aveda Salon & Spa. Caring is key for us ... caring for our customers, for each other, and for the earth.

CARING FOR OUR CUSTOMERS means that we strive to make each and every experience at Aveda Salon & Spa comfortable, enjoyable and special. We are proud and grateful to have again been voted “Hawaii’s Best Massage” by Star-Bulletin and MidWeek readers this year. We feel this reinforces our philosophy of caring for our customers - whether they come in for a massage, facial, manicure, hair service, or are just browsing through our store. We believe in “high touch” rather than “high tech” when it comes to caring for and pampering our customers. We know that we owe all of our success to them.

CARING FOR EACH OTHER means treating each other with respect and kindness. This caring also extends to our parent corporation, which provides educational opportunities throughout the year - in Hawaii, as well as out-of-state - for our employees’ skill development and advancement. We also provide other excellent benefits above and beyond most other companies, including free, totally confidential counseling services. The way we care for our employees earned Aveda Salon & Spa recognition by the American Psychological Association as one of Hawaii’s Healthiest Workplaces last year.

CARING FOR THE EARTH is probably most visible each April when we celebrate Earth Month with special events and fundraisers for the Hawaii Nature Center, our primary beneficiary, as well as other Aveda environmental organization partners around the globe. However, we “walk the talk” 365 days a year by recycling, using recycled products and packaging, and participating in Hawaii Nature Center and other community events. Even our popular Aveda gift cards are biodegradable and reusable!

We are the only full-service Aveda Lifestyle salon, spa and retail shop featuring the entire line of world-famous, plant-derived Aveda products in Hawaii, and use Aveda products exclusively in all of our salon and spa treatments. Many of our products are made from plants grown for us by native communities.

Dominique Conseil, Aveda president, has said, “Our ingredients are ‘manufactured’ by plants grown around the world. The story of a plant ingredient is also the story of those who cultivate it ... one of integrity, but too often also of hardship, as native communities strive to earn a fair living. Aveda strives to create value at both ends of its supply chain. The uninterrupted chain of care ‘from soil to bottle’ is our promise to you and to the planet.”

Of course, having a hard-working, highly skilled team of managers and staff working with me is the key to making everything come together. The caring, the commitment, the passion to fulfill our mission starts with all of them. I would like to take this opportunity to say “MAHALO” to all of them for offering their very best every single day - and also to thank all of you for your continued confidence in us.

Next Week: Nicole Piesker, Executive Director of Hawaii Women’s Business Center
