Partying On A Mobile Golf Course
Baron Obata brings MiniGolf2U
Birdie or bogey? If you have at least 500 square feet of space, Baron Obata can bring a mini-golf course to you. He’ll set up your mini-tee time and nine holes with his company MiniGolf2U.
From keiki parties to corporate events, Obata has lugged his portable 18-hole mini-golf course to back yards, hotel ballrooms, corporate offices and convention spaces.
“I didn’t realize it’d get this big,” says Obata, who first turned the small course into a party event just three months ago.
The Nuuanu resident and McKinley High grad designed the golf course with a friend. Golfers and hackers can rent five holes, nine holes or 18 holes.
He provides putters, balls, score cards, pens, tournament charts, and sets it all up in about 30 minutes’ time.
Obata says he’s been golfing since he was 7 years old, and that’s one thing that led him to do something along those same lines. A Wells Fargo loan officer by day, he said he had always been thinking about doing something new and different.
Once he started his new gig, word of mouth from family and friends has been key - in addition to the spurts of advertising he has done.
“The more exposure I get, the more referrals come, and that leads to more bookings,” says Obata, noting that he’s scheduled about three events a month and into February next year.
With the steady bookings, Obata, who is mostly a one-man operation, notes that one of his challenges is moving the heavy course around, as he chose sturdy materials to build it. Obata says his goals for the future include tweaking the design.
“Nobody knows until you actually try it,” he explains. “I’m glad I took the leap. It’s about finding a niche that nobody else has.”
Obata says he eventually hopes to franchise his game.
