Go ahead, hit the glass, says Dan Brown,
who stands behind his product, Ace
Security Laminates

Dan Brown purposely gives his potential customers a baseball bat to hit, beat up, smash and ram a window that has been treated with his products. His company, Ace Security Laminates, specializes in safety and security.

Brown says the laminates act like clear security bars on your windows so robbers can’t get in. The laminates are also good for preventing hurricane winds from destroying glass doors and windows.

“It’s one thing for me to tell how it works, and it’s another to let you use the baseball bat and let you test it yourself,” explains Brown. “We are confident in our product. We even stand behind the glass and let people shoot at us or throw bricks.”

Oddly enough, he started this business two years ago because when he worked with golf shops as a distributor for Calloway products for 10 years, the golf shops often were broken into. Researching and learning about what security measures to take to protect the shops is how he discovered Ace Security Laminates.

The Honolulu office, which opened two years ago, has already done work for Straub, Tripler, Central Pacific Bank, American Savings Bank, Eki Cyclery and many private homes. Ace Security Laminates are on buildings at the Logan Airport, the Navy Intelligence Building as well as in embassies across the globe.

Next month, Brown will let more than 200 insurance agents test his product as he explains its benefits. For homeowners who use laminates, some insurance plans will deduct 15 percent.

“The Oklahoma City bombing is what woke people up to the benefits of having security laminates in commercial buildings, courthouses, state and federal facilities,” he explains.

Brown, originally from Florida, came to Hawaii when he was in the Marines 15 years ago. The Pearl City resident can be found at the shop with some of his four employees, or he might be on site giving demonstrations.

One of the most difficult things about running this business, he says, is educating people on how vulnerable Hawaii is to hurricanes. “It only takes one hurricane,” says Brown. “You can’t prepare for it after it hits.”

He notes that one lesson he’d like to share with others in business is to have patience and persistence. He advises to keep making the sales calls, keep working and keep going. One of his favorite inspirational quotes is “Extraordinary people are ordinary people with extraordinary determination.”

Ace Security Laminates is located at the Gentry Design Center at 560 N. Nimitz Highway, Suite 113. Shop hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 548-3400.
