Open Casting Call

The Hawaii Fashion & Beauty Expo in March will host the Hawaii Top Model and Operation Runway competitions with an open casting call Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon for models, and from 1 to 2 p.m. for designers at Honolulu Design Center.

These competitions are the Hawaii Fashion & Beauty Expo’s version of the hit reality television shows America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway.

Models and designers will be evaluated by a panel of four directors, who will eliminate contestants down to the top 10 semi-final-ists for the models and the top five semi-finalists for the designers. These finalists will then participate in the Hawaii Top Model and Operation Runway competitions March 25-27 at Neal Blaisdell Center in front of a live audience. More than $1,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded.

Windward Mall News

Windward Mall celebrates President’s Day weekend with a sidewalk sale Feb. 18-21. Participating retailers will offer special savings. Also, stop by Center Court to enter to win a two-night stay at the newly renovated Outrigger Reef on the Beach. No purchase necessary. For more information, visit WindwardMall.com.

Also new at Windward Mall is the opening of five new merchants - Soul Trex, Gyu-Kaku, Toys R Us Express, Tax Busters and Cubby Caboose Mini Express Train.

Local start-up retailer Soul Trex offers high-quality, eco-friendly outdoor apparel and equipment, specializing in hiking, climbing, camping, biking and water sports gear. A member of 1 Percent for the Planet, Soul Trex donates 1 percent of revenue to environmental causes. The company also established a program called 1 Percent 4 Kids and donates an additional 1 percent of revenue to youth programs promoting activities and outdoor recreation for children. Gyu-Kaku, a yakiniku-style barbecue chain-restaurant, where diners choose meats and vegetables then cook the items over a grill at their table, is expected to open in the second quarter of 2011. Toys R Us Express is a smaller version of the well-known children’s store, offering a convenient selection of playthings and perennial favorites.

Tax Busters is a seasonal store offering assistance with federal tax returns, income return services, filing services and tax return preparation services. Cubby Caboose Mini Express Train, a train designed for children that will run by the Sears Wing on the lower level by Paina Food Court, opens Feb. 15. For $3, climb aboard the train and take a ride around the mall with Cubby and his friends.
