A bite-sized look at Mother’s Day dining in Honolulu.

Bring Mom to Paris for a Day.

With travel the way it is, bringing your mom anywhere that involves an airport is not as pleasant as staying home. But venture downtown to Du Vin and you can spend the afternoon in a decidedly European environment with some excellent French-inspired fare.

Scott Nelson is the executive chef at Brasserie Du Vin and he cooks up dishes influenced by the Mediterranean and by his own New Orleans roots.

There’s a $20 prix fixe lunch that offers appetizer entrée and dessert (baked oysters, grilled fish and crème brulee, for example) at tremendous savings off the regular menu price. Other notable menu items include Nelson’s gorgeous Moules Frites ($14), Stuffed Baked Brie ($14) and Roasted Dijon Chicken with Greek Olives ($14). Bring your mom this weekend for Mother’s Day - especially if she’s always wanted to go to Paris. It might be d o w n t o w n Honolulu, but Du Vin is a dining world all its own.

A Taste of Home Cooking at Ige’s.

If ever a restaurant was inspired by a mom and by her home cooking, it’s Ige’s Restaurant in Aiea. Ron Ige and his family have been continuing the tradition of great food and huge portions started by their mom, Kazuko, in the 1940s. Today Ige’s serves local-style home cooking in a relaxed environment with lots of room to bring family and friends. This Sunday, a Mother’s Day brunch with live entertainment will be served from 9. a.m. to 1 p.m. At just $20 for adults ($15 for senior citizens), and with more than 20 items on the buffet line (including corned beef hash, hamburger steak, shoyu pork, top sirloin, garlic ahi, scrambled eggs, an omelet station and a variety of breakfast meats), Ige’s offers great value and a warm welcome.
