Aloha Friday Entertainment At Pagoda

There’s a whole new lineup of music and entertainment at Pagoda, where local musicians are being featured in the hotel’s LaSalle lounge. Show times are from 8 to 10 p.m., and LaSalle opens for a Hawaiian dinner buffet, pupu and cocktails at 7 p.m. There is no cover charge for entertainment - just a two-drink minimum.

“Entertainment is something that our guests have always enjoyed at Pagoda,” says director of food and beverage, Debbie Tuaileva.“We’ve had a wonderful response from our guests since bringing back the Aloha Friday entertainment.”

November lineups include Weldon Kekauoha, Aunty Genoa Keawe, Piliaoha, Raiatea Helm and Maunalua. And there’s entertainment at the Pagoda Waterfall, too, where hula dancers entertain guests on Friday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m.

Wagyu Beef On The Buffet Line

While you might marvel at the prices of Makino Chaya’s buffet, there’s no doubting the quality of the imported Wagyu beef introduced earlier this year.“Our customers love the beef,” says owner Toru Makino of the high-quality, famed Japanese beef, “and as the biggest importer of this 100 percent premium beef from Japan, we are able to offer our customers very reasonable pricing.”

The beef is served teppanyaki-style and is available at both Makino Chaya locations. Also on the extensive menu are shrimp tempura, scallops, crab legs, Maine lobster and dozens of sushi and sashimi options that change daily.

Celebrating its first anniversary at Aloha Tower Marketplace this month, the restaurant also is offering a birthday discount to guests who dine on their birthday and provide a copy of their birth certificate - for ages up to 65, there’s a 50 percent food discount. Over 65? Your dinner is free with proof of birth date.

The Aloha Tower Makino Chaya also offers guests three hours free validated parking.

Sushi Land

Sushi Land owner Marie Choe says she always wanted to own a “small, manageable restaurant,“but she never dreamed that the one she frequented for its great sushi and fresh salads would be the one she’d end up running.

“I used to eat here at Sushi Land all the time because I thought the food was very good,” she says. “Then one day, when I heard the owners wanted to sell, I thought perhaps I can do this.”

Choe hasn’t changed much on the menu since taking over earlier this year, but she does take great pride in ensuring the freshness of the salads. “We cut lettuce every two hours. I prepare all of the ahi salads myself, and we use the freshest possible vegetables,” she says. The award-winning ahi salad has long been one of those fabulous neighborhood must-try dishes. Fresh ahi sits atop a colorful bed of crisp romaine lettuce, slivers of carrots, daikon, red cabbage and green onion topped with ginger tobiko. The salad comes with two house-made dressings for $8.75 or as a complete meal with miso soup and rice for $10.75.

Other winning dishes from this small but spectacularly good restaurant include Shrimp Tempura Udon ($8.30) and Chicken Teriyaki Udon with miso soup ($9.20)
