Sam Choy’s Diamond Head Open for Lunch in April

Sam Choy’s Diamond Head restaurant will be opening for lunch three days in April to help celebrate Administrative Professionals Week. The fine dining restaurant with local flair usually opens for dinner only, but chef Aaron Fukuda will prepare and all-you-can-eat buffet April 23, 24 and 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sam Choy’s is no stranger to large buffets - its popular Sunday brunch caters to hundreds of Island families - and many of the popular dishes will be on the buffet menu during the weekday lunches. Slow-roasted prime rib, fresh Island fish, a selection of salads, a poke bar and extensive desserts are some of the featured dishes.


The buffet is $25 per person.

And at Sam Choy’s Breakfast Lunch and Crab, brewmaster Dave Campbell hosts a beer dinner April 17 paired with foods by executive chef Aurelio Garcia. The menu includes hot and sour soup with roasted chicken dumplings, beef laulau and macadamia nut-crusted scallops. The beer dinners are hosted monthly at Sam Choy’s Breakfast Lunch and Crab and feature a variety of the Big Aloha Brewery’s hand-crafted brews.

Schweiger Vineyards Wine Dinner, April 17 at Elua

There’s a family theme to an upcoming wine dinner at Elua, where chefs Donato Loperfido, Philippe Padovani and co-owner Keith Kiuchi concentrate their efforts on finding small, specialized winemakers. “Donato tends to focus on family producers with his food and wine importing company, Flavors of Italy,” says Keith. “And we do the same with the wines.”

Schweiger Vineyards is the featured winery at the April 17 dinner. Fred Schweiger is a former contractor who attended UC Davis to hone his winemaking skills, while son Andy is the wine-maker and sister Diana is the sales and marketing manager. Diana will be at Elua April 17 to chat with guests about the family winery and their unique micro-climate high above the fog line in Spring Mountain, Calif. The winery offers 100 percent varietal wines, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The menu for the April 17 dinner includes fresh ahi tuna carpaccio, homemade gnocchi with blue crab, pan-fried tender-loin of beef, and a ravioli of almond cream and seasonal fruits.

Cost is $75 per person and includes three Schweiger wines.

Kids Eat Free at Wahoo’s

If you’re looking for somewhere to take the kids for a casual, fun dining experience, Wahoo’s Fish Tacos on the corner of Ward and Auahi is offering a Kids Combo meal free with the purchase of any adult combo. Keiki meals at Wahoo’s include a Kid’s Bowl - fish, chicken, shrimp, steak or pork served over rice and beans - Tacos or Enchiladas, Mini Cheese Quesadillas, Black Bean Burritos or Kid’s Nachos.

Go for its most popular dish, the No. 2 Combo - tacos or enchiladas filled with anything from blackened or flame-broiled fish to sautéed teriyaki vegetables, grilled chicken, sautéed shrimp, marinated steak or potbraised pork.
