If you miss the kind of service that’s rapidly disappearing from our city restaurants - the kind given by well-seasoned staff at their posts for decades, then stop by New Eagle Café soon. There’s a busy breakfast and lunch crowd most days and people travel from all over town for the dinner specials. A combination of local, Japanese and American food, New Eagle Café manages to get the balance right when it comes to complete meals that offer good value and large portions.

Expect a diner-style atmosphere, an unfailingly friendly staff and specials this month that include Fried Aji Teishoku (Aji deep-fried, sashimi, tempura, rice, miso soup and tsukemono $15.45), and a pound of King crab legs ( yes, the big ones), for just $13.95 with the purchase of a complete meal.

With waterside views and a menu that includes prime rib, kalua pork, fish and chicken entrees as well as a hearty selection of rice, poke, salads and meats, the $17.95 price tag is hard to beat. Validated parking at the Aloha Tower parking lot.

Burgers come in a variety of styles from the classic great old-fashioned burger to the almost irresistible BIG burger with cheddar cheese, caramelized onions bacon and avocado. Soondubu is special at So Gong Dong

Serving arguably some of the finest Korean food in Honolulu, So Gong Dong has an avid following of regulars who go there for the signature soondubu (beef and pork soup). “About 70 percent of our customers come for the soup,” says owner Steve Lee, who opened So Gong Dong (originally on Kapiolani) more than 12 years ago. Dine teppanyakistyle, or choose from a menu that features dishes like spiced chicken, kalbi and seafood pancakes. Service is speedy, dishes come to the table piping hot and the side dishe that accompany each order are plentiful and interesting. All of the recipes are original - created by Lee over the course of 30 years in the restaurant industry. The soondubu has many imitators - but his is hard to beat.
