Eat Gators - Go Murphy’s.

In case you need reminding, it’s the opening game of the University of Hawaii football season this Saturday, as Warrior fans and players head to Florida for what hopefully will be an exciting game. Back at home, there’s lots of opportunity to grab breakfast and a beverage to watch this first game of the Coach Mac era. Game starts at 6:30 a.m. Aug. 30, and at Murphy’s Bar and Grill on the corner of Merchant Street and Nuuanu Avenue, there’ll be a breakfast buffet with a ton of alligator on the menu.

It’s always great to be able to watch UH games live,” says owner Don Murphy, “and we figured we could bring a little tailgating excitement to the morning by adding some gator to the menu.”

Look for the usual great selection of breakfast offerings from Murph and his crew: bacon, eggs, sausage and the city’s best corned beef hash, along with a selection of fruit, French toast and freshly baked muffins, and then try gator sausage, gator on a stick and gator chili.

The cost for breakfast is $10.50, and Murphy’s will open at 6 a.m. Saturday. There’s lots of parking available on weekends both on the street and opposite Murphy’s in the parking lot. With several flat screens in the bar and giant screens in the restaurant, all fans should be assured of a great view of the game and some great gator, too. Bloody Marys and grilled gators - must be football season.

Food, Wine And Entertainment Bring Lessons Of Love.

Lisa Higashiguchi didn’t wait long to start a fundraising chain of events when she found out her lifetime friend Jo Kapololu had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Jo and I have been friends since we were 6 years old,” says Higashiguchi, who works at Hoku’s restaurant. “I knew that Jo’s medical bills would be huge, so it seemed a great idea to call on our incredible food and beverage community for help.”

The restaurant and liquor industry in Hawaii gives generously to almost every single fundraiser you’re likely to attend, and Higashiguchi’s Lessons of Love is no different.

Friday, Sept. 5, will see the talents of chef Wayne Hirabayashi come together with Southern Wines and Spirits and beers from Paradise Beverages and the Big Aloha Brewery. Expect the heavy pupu to be outstanding - Hirabayashi is the executive chef at Hoku’s at The Kahala, and he’s one of our most-talented local chefs. Music and entertainment are by Makana and Tempo Valley, and there’s a silent auction with trips and restaurant gift certificates among the prizes. Tickets are just $60 and are available for purchase at Coffee Talk in Kaimuki, or at the door.

If you’re looking for a fun event with great food and wine next weekend, then do stop by.

“I believe that in our community we need to support each other in all moments, and especially during those times when we can stand up, lift spirits and offer strength and hope,” says Higashiguchi.

“This evening is our way of helping Jo financially, but it will also help to keep us all aware of the devastation breast cancer brings to families every day.”

Tea at 1024 Stands Up To Cancer.

There’s something about a cup of tea that encourages a long exhale and a moment or two of relaxation. Or at least that’s the message Michelle Henry of Tea at 1024 would like to impart.

“We like to think that we give people respite from their worries for a short while,” she says. “When our guests step in here from busy Nuuanu Avenue we provide respite for their weary souls.”

This upcoming First Friday, Henry will turn the tearoom into a respite (and fun) stop for those willing to STAND UP TO CANCER.

The evening fundraiser offers desserts by Sugar Rush by Frances, Champagne by Chinatown’s HASR wine shop, and tea and tasteful surrounding by Henry.

“There are just a few seats left,” warns Henry of the popular Desserts After Dark event that’s a regular part of First Fridays.

Make reservations, as seating is limited.
