Kraft Foods Continues Fight Against Hunger.

Kraft Foods in Hawaii has partnered with Longs Drug Stores to launch “Hunger Never Takes a Vacation,” a fundraising campaign for the Hawaii Foodbank. Summer can be a tough time for some kids, particularly during the weeks when school programs are closed. So throughout August, the Kraft/Foodbank alliance will help feed families in the remaining days of summer. Kraft Foods kicked off the program last week with a $5,000 donation, presented by Kraft business manager Gerald Shintaku.


“We couldn’t be more pleased to collaborate with Longs Drug Stores on this much-needed program,” he says. “Schools have done a terrific job in offering meals to students in need during the regular school year, and we want to ensure that students remain fed throughout the year, especially when school meal programs are not in place.”

Making a donation is easy. Look for bright-orange “Hunger Never Takes a Vacation” tear-off coupons at Longs Drug Stores statewide - $5 will feed a child, and your $10 contribution will feed an entire family. The amount of the coupon, which becomes your donation to the Hawaii Foodbank, will be added to your receipt upon checkout.

As back-to-school fever hits many of us, add a “Hunger” coupon to your shopping list. More than 33,000 children who go hungry each year in Hawaii thank you.

There are some incredible new looks to sushi plates at cutting-edge sushi center Sansei Seafood and Sushi Restaurant. Chef D.K. Kodama and his team of sushi chefs have introduced a new menu that features local kampachi, amberjack from Kona, Japanese hamachi and white tuna sashimi. The flavors are bold, exciting and barely contained by their plates. With dishes like Cajun Seared White Tuna Sashimi (with shaved Maui onions, red jalapeno, cilantro and a spicy yukke drizzle), Japanese Hamachi Nori Aioli Poke (with crispy lotus root chips) and Hawaiian Rolls made with moi, the sushi at Sansei is among the most exciting, flavorful and colorful in town.

“We are getting a very good reaction from our guests as they try the new sushi dishes,” says managing partner Ivy Nagayama.

In addition to fabulous sushi, Sansei also offers guests a 50 percent discount each Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. (Guests must be at least 21 to enter the restaurant for the late-night food and drink specials promotions). There’s live jazz on Thursdays, and free karaoke on Friday and Saturday evenings - an event so popular that you can expect to stand in line if you arrive late. But who cares? Fifty percent off the incredible food selection is worth the wait at anytime, day or night.

Get Ready to Go Greek.

The 28th annual Greek Festival happens Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23 and 24, from noon to 9 p.m. at McCoy Pavilion in Ala Moana Park.

The cultural event celebrates “all things Greek” and features live and lively Greek entertainment and some of the best authentic Greek food available in Hawaii.

Festival highlights include performances by FOTIA, a popular Greek band from the West Coast, plus performances by guitarist Sotos Kappas, dance performances by The Nisiotes Dance Group and more. There will be Greek folk dance instruction sessions where audience participation is encouraged.

Greek foods will be available throughout the weekend, and popular dishes include spanakopita (spinach pie), gyro sandwiches, moussaka, pasticcio, Greek chicken, souvlaki (skewered beef and pork), Greek and pasta salads, loukoumathes (Greek malasadas), baklava and a wide assortment of Greek pastries.

The Greek Taverna will pour imported Greek beer, ouzo, and red, white and retsina Greek wines.

Admission is $3 for adults, free for children age 11 and younger and active military and their families.

Hank’s Gourmet Dogs In Waikiki.

Hank’s Haute Dogs, Hawaii’s only gourmet hot dog restaurant, has opened its second location and can now be found under the banyan tree in the International Market Place.

“We just celebrated our first anniversary in business and after a very successful year, we decided to expand our operations to serve Waikiki,” says owner Henry “Hank” Adaniya.

“We invite everybody, including our devoted customers, to visit us at the International Market Place and try our new creations only available at our new location.”

Hank’s Haute Dogs is offering two new items only available at the new Waikiki stand: the Hawaiian Dog served with pineapple relish, passion fruit mustard and grilled sweet Maui onions; and Hank’s hand-cut potato chips offered with the signature dips garlic aioli, curry ketchup or wasabi-tobiko cream. The Waikiki location also offers favorites from the original Kaka’ako store such as the Chicago, New York, chili, Kobe, lobster and bratwurst dogs. Beverages include Waialua Soda, IBC Root Beer, pineapple slush and fresh hibiscus lemonade.

‘Elua Summer Wine Series Continues

There’s still time to reserve a table at ‘Elua Restaurant and Wine Bar for the next wine dinner in a summer series that has captured the imagination of foodies with pairings from chefs Philippe Padovani and Donato Loperfido.

This weekend’s dinner brings together Burgundy wines from importer Robert Chadderdon and food from both chefs.

Chef Philippe starts with a rich seafood bisque paired with Jean-Pierre Auvigne’s Saint-Veran “Les Chenes,” and follows this with a creamy polenta with portobello mushroom finished with a mushroom and shallot jus. This dish is accompanied by Bruno Colin’s Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge, a rare Pinot Noir from a village known for Chardonnay.

Chef Donato’s entrée is duck breast in a Bing cherry sauce paired with Bruno Colin’s Santenay Rouge. Padovani finishes the evening with pears poached in black currants, red Burgundy and spices with

Tahitian vanilla ice cream and chocolate.

Cost of the dinner is $75 for four courses including three 2-ounce glasses of wine.

There are lots of new dishes on the menu at Romano’s Macaroni Grill, including smaller portion sizes for lunch and a range of kids’ meals that have been revamped by executive chef Mike Longworth.

The menu, which was created for children ages 12 and under, includes grilled chicken and broccoli served with pasta; macaroni and cheese; fettuccine Alfredo; spaghetti with a choice of red or meat sauce and one “giant meatball”; Chicken Fingerias with fries or macaroni and cheese; and Mona Lisa’s Masterpizza with a choice of cheese or pepperoni.

Moms and dads on the lookout for nutritionally balanced meals can choose salads or steamed broccoli as a substitute for macaroni and cheese or fries.


All entrees include a choice of soda, fruit punch, orange juice, cranberry juice or milk (with free refills), and dessert is vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce.

The new children’s offerings are presented in a colorful menu complete with crayons. Each complete meal is $7.59.
