Dave Stewart of Brasserie Du Vin

Du Vin Makes Bon Appetit‘s Best List

Brasserie Du Vin, Dave Stewart’s French style, Chinatown brasserie was voted one of the magazine’s Hot 10 wine bars in the country.

Featuring wine bars that are cutting edge and with inspirational and edgy food, the article describes Du Vin as offering a “taste of the French countryside.” We’re happy to report that we’ve always considered Du Vin one of the coolest places to hang out in Honolulu, and it’s nice to see national recognition for this Chinatown gem. Owner Dave Stewart was enjoying a celebratory glass of wine last Friday at the bar. “We’re really pleased to have been named one of the top 10 wine bars in the nation,” he said. “Obviously it means a lot.”

Brasserie Du Vin is celebrating its second anniversary this month with new menu items and some of the best happy hour pricing in town.

Try the Moules Frittes if it’s your first time there - a sensuous cast-iron pot of lightly steamed mussels in fragrant white wine and herbs topped with crispy, hot, garlicky fries. Make sure you ask for extra bread - it’s essential to mop up those gorgeous juices.

At The Chef ‘s Table…

Chef Russell Siu hosts a series of monthly Chef ‘s Table dinners at his fine dining restaurant 3660 on The Rise. The theme may change - this month its “Natural and Organic” - but each dinner offers guests a chance to sample Siu’s (and chef de cuisine Lydell Leong’s) talents in the kitchen. Dinners are served in the restaurant’s banquet rooms, and wines from the regular list are offered at 40 percent off. “We also don’t mind if people want to bring their own wines,” says Siu. “There’s no corkage fee as we want to encourage guests to experiment with our food and their own wines.”

This month’s menu includes an amuse bouche of wild salmon tartar, certified organic chicken pot pie, and fire roasted, natural rack of lamb with vine-ripened tomato concasse and garlic confit.

At the Willows, executive chef Jay Matsukawa and managing director Kyle Nakayama put on a lunch buffet with a difference. Take your boss if he’s a UH fan - they have lots of football giveaways during Boss’ week

Reservations for the Oct. 23 Natural and Organic dinner are now being taken. Cost is $85.

Panya Bistro

Panya Bistro has always had a diverse menu. The bakery-bistro-bar at Ala Moana is well known for its delicate Japanese-style pastries and breads, as well as a European style café with everything from Japanese-style curries, thick oxtail stews, ramen noodles, sandwiches (made with freshly baked white or wheat bread, or croissants) and salads that include pasta, mixed greens, smoked salmon and prawns.

At Panya Bistro, cakes, pastries and house-made breads are given their distinctive light and airy touch. Owner Annie Yeung (center) with pastry chef Nanako Perez and Carmen Montejo

There’s a wide range of tasty panini served on house-made foccacia bread, including a cheesy Philly steak sandwich and a tasty mozzarella, tomato and homemade pesto offering.

Boss’ Week - Book Lunch.

Lest you forget, Boss’ Week is Oct 13-17, and it comes at a perfect time for restaurants in need of a sales boost. Yes, it’s a Hallmark day, but our local restaurants will be glad for your reservations - think of it as supporting the local economy and not just keeping on the boss’ good side. At The Willows, a lunchtime buffet offers a wide range of seafood, meats and chef specials including Alaskan king crab legs, sushi stations, fresh fish and prime rib. During the week of Oct. 13 each boss will receive gifts with their lunch, and the chance to win UH Warrior football memorabilia. There’s two on-field passes to the UH Idaho game on Nov. 22 up for grabs, so if your boss is a fan make sure to make reservations at The Willows.

The Willows lunch buffet costs $21.95.

Best Beachside Bargain at Shore Bird

If you need a break from the bleak news and economy woes, there’s nowhere that offers a more immediate fix of sand,

sun and good food than Shore Bird at Outrigger Reef in Waikiki. With free validated parking and 50 percent off breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, the beachfront Shore Bird has one of the greatest value menus - and locations - of any restaurant in Hawaii.

All-you-can-eat salad bar and grilling your own steak and fish is a big part of the Shore Bird attraction, but don’t forget about their excellent appetizers that include fresh island sashimi

“I think that sometimes people forget what Hawaii is all about,” says GM Del Uyehara, “but when local people come here, take in the plantation house style of the restaurant and look out right on to the beach, it brings them back.” Shore Bird’s ‘backyard on the beach’ casual approach is apparent in the menu, where dinner guests choose a cut of beef, pork, chicken or fish and then head for the giant, beach-side grill to cook their own. There’s an all-you-can-eat salad bar as an accompaniment, and a range of appetizers that include some excellent ahi katsu and sashimi. Breakfast features hot entrees and a fresh fruit salad bar, and at lunch there’s a variety of all-you-can—eat buffets (themes vary daily) as well as sandwiches and salads.
