MAC 24-7 Celebrates James Bond

In honor of the newest James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, opening Nov. 14, MAC 24-7 Bar and Restaurant invites diners to win tickets to the VIP premiere party at Ward Theatres as well as other cool prizes.

Just pop into the Waikiki restaurant between now and Nov. 4, order an entire entree and receive a “Secret Agent” scratch ticket for your chance to win. Diners 18 and older are welcome to participate.

MAC’s modern American menu features a variety of items prepared with local ingredients, including the popular Mac Daddy pancakes, which come in hot and wild blueberry, banana, walnut and chocolate chunk,“The Elvis” (peanut butter swirled pancakes with diced bacon), pineapple, coconut, macadamia nut and other tasty flavors.

The white Cheddar mac and cheese (served with snow peas) is also popular, as well as the sumo saimin and seared ahi tuna.

If after finishing the Mac Daddy pancakes - if you can - bite into a killer cupcake, offered in such flavors as classic carrot cake, pineapple upside-down, haupia and devil’s food-peanut butter cup.

At the Nov. 14 Quantum of Solace premiere, VIP guests will enjoy pre-show pupus and shaken - not stirred - martinis from MAC 24-7, including the classic Absolut martini, the Kuhio Storm Martini made with mango smash, Skyy Citron, Van Gogh pineapple, Bols Orange Curacao, Stoli Persik, or the Vesper Martini, which James Bond drank in Casino Royale.

Also, throughout the movie promotion diners can participate in special James Bond-themed days at the restaurant, including “Bond Girls Galore” on Oct. 17. Come dressed as a Bond girl.

On Oct. 31, the theme is “A Night in Venice,” and diners can come dressed as a gondolier or serenade the waiter with a Bond theme song.

On Nov. 4 the theme is “Election Night,” to coincide with the actual presidential election night, during which diners can vote for the best Bond.

Hanapa’a Sushi Company

Hanapa’a Sushi Company is answering the call of the lunch crowd, opening more locations where customers can come in and quickly grab freshly made sushi to satisfy their mid-day hunger.

As of Oct. 1, Hanapa’a Sushi Company expanded its retail operations to include two more locations inside Times Supermarkets, one at the Beretania store and the other at Times Waimalu. Hanapa’a Sushi also is located inside Times Kaimuki.

By December, owners Grant Kawasaki, Norlan Horita, Shannon Akazawa and Ikaika Kimura are hoping to open three more locations.

Founded in April, Hanapa’a Sushi Company is all about catering to local customers, offering affordable prices (about $4-$7 for most items) and a maximum of a four-hour timestamped shelf life for all fresh sushi products.

Some popular menu items include classic futomaki rolls, rainbow rolls, spicy tuna dynamite, various types of donburi (including spicy tuna, ahi natto and poke), chirashi bowls, makisushi, nigiri sushi, salads, temaki hand rolls and other traditional sushi items.

Customers can check out their website, http://www.hanapaasushi.com, to pre-order sushi platters, which can be picked up at any of the current locations.

Shelby’s Sweets

Until recently customers could only order the delectable homemade sweets of Shelby’s Sweets on the Internet, but now, thanks to much hard work and help from friends, owner Phyllis Moore-Shelby opened a Shelby’s Sweets store at Nimitz Center in Honolulu.

“This has really been 10 years in the making,” says Moore-Shelby of finally opening her own store. “A year ago I was thinking I would have a place.”

A small crowd gathered for the grand opening Oct. 11. Samples of chocolate chocolate chip scones, mini sweet potato and pecan pies were offered, as well as red velvet cake, chocolate mousse tarts and coffee and tea.

Inside the cozy Southern tea house-themed store are wicker couches and chairs with comfy cushions, soft carpeting and the scent of freshly baked cookies wafting through the air.

Customers can order Moore-Shelby’s cakes, pies, cupcakes, scones, cookies and quick breads for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings or whatever the occasion.

In addition to the chocolate chocolate chip scones served at the opening, Moore-Shelby also makes pineapple, coconut, raisin, lemon, blueberry, cranberry and orange flavors. She also creates baskets, including holiday, specialty baskets, corporate appreciation baskets and arrival baskets.

“I’ve always baked,” she says.“I get inspiration from what’s in season.”

Moore-Shelby made her way to Hawaii from her native Texas as a former flight attendant. She always loved baking, so in 2002, when she stepped down from serving in the skies, Moore-Shelby sharpened her culinary skills at Kapiolani Community College. She bakes all her goodies in a commercial kitchen at Pacific Gateway Center in Kalihi, using recipes handed down from her mother.

“I wake up every day and I’m so happy to go work,” says Moore-Shelby. “I’m excited.”
