Spicy Thai and teppanyaki

Thai is one ethnic food that suits Hawaii beautifully. Hot, spicy chicken wings, cool green papaya salad, sweet satay chicken and fresh, fragrant summer rolls all go well with a crisp glass of Riesling- or Thai beer - on any warm evening.

And most Thai food lovers agree that some of the best the city has to offer can be found in bustling McCully Shopping Center, where this month guests can enjoy some free Thai tapioca after dinner. A Phuket specialty well worth trying is the Whole Island Fish in a Spicy Lemongrass Sauce, and green papaya salad is a must. Ask about the heat level on the salad, though. Some days the “mild” is incredibly hot and on other days the “medium” is perfectly palatable. Best advice? Ask the waiters how the heat is that day. Apparently it all depends on the size of the papaya they buy at market ... Spring rolls, fish patties, stuffed chicken wings and shrimp rolls are all available individually as appetizers, but come in a colorful platter with a combination of peanut and spicy chili sauce for $9.50 - a great way to experience several dishes at once.

Vegetarians will appreciate dishes that number more than 20 - rice noodles and broccoli in Thai-style gravy with tofu, Thai fried noodles and Thai garlic mixed vegetables. House specialties include seafood dishes that are elegantly spiced. Seafood with black bean sauce and fish in Thai peanut sauce are well worth trying.

Dining deal at Musashi

Every once in a while, one of those amazingly too-good-to-miss dining deals comes along. We’ve been waiting for this one from Musashi, which shows up a couple of times a year and has local diners booking out the restaurant. Last time I was there, a group had driven to Waikiki from the North Shore to take advantage of the $28.75 teishoku/teppanyaki dinner specials - and they’d booked a room ( at the kamaaina rate) for the night too. Needless to say, everyone in their party was having a great time.

Dining at Musashi is always a great, fun experience. The food is excellent - and options for set meals include steak, shrimp and lobster combinations. But dining when the entire meals costs just $28.75 is even more fun.

“It’s our way of saying thank you to our customers for their loyal support every year,” says Musashi manager Marjorie Kubota. Make sure you call and reserve a spot while the offer lasts.

Ask Master Sommelier Chuck Furuya to describe the wines of Molly Dooker and he is almost lost for words.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen wines have this much impact in the market,” he says of the Australian everyday drinking wines that have taken the wine world by storm. Selling out of wine stores around the state after top ratings from wine magazines (Robert Parker gave one a whop-ping 99 points out of 100), the wines are unpretentious, accessible and incredibly well-made. Furuya has managed to grab winemakers Sparky and Sarah Marquis for a one-night-only event at Hiroshi Eurasion Tapas on Friday Sept. 7.

“We’ll be serving seven of their highly rated wines with dishes specially created for the evening by chefs Hiroshi Fukui and Keith Endo,” enthuses Furuya. Sister restaurant Vino also will be serving Molly Dooker wines by the glass until they run out.


If you’re lucky, there might still be tickets left for what promises to be an incredible evening. Cost is $75 pp and there are two seatings.
