Chuck Furuya invites some of the nation’s great winemakers to Vino Nov 9

Great winemakers descend on Vino.

Vino and Hiroshi Eurasion Tapas will be closed to the general public Friday, Nov. 9, and open to hundreds of guests who love wine.

“It’s a night that we dedicate to the Hawaii Lupus Foundation,“says master sommelier Chuck Furuya. “And those people who came last year know that it is a fabulous evening.”

With food stations throughout the two restaurants and wine-makers pouring their own wines, the event is one-of-a-kind in Hawaii and a must for anyone who follows the careers of some of America’s best boutique wine-makers.

Making the Hawaii trip this year are Jim Clendenen (Au Bon Climat), Mia Klein (Selene), Hilary Graves (Graves Wine Growers), Mike Kuimelis (Mantra), Serge Carlei (Carlei Vineyards), Gary Burk (Costa de Oro), Rick Morrison (Qupe), Tina Martin (Keller Estate) and Stephanie De Masi (Juslyn).

Each of these winemakers brings something unique to their craft, and the fundraising evening offers an opportunity to get up-close and personal with the wines and the people who make them.

Great food, great wines, great cause - don’t miss it.

Tickets are $100 per person. Reservations are being taken by Hawaii Lupus Foundation, 285-3550.

Hawaii residents are kings of karaoke.

A recent karaoke talent search held in Laughlin, Nev., brought together almost 300 singers from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States, with the five Hawaii finalists all placing in the top 20.

Wailana Coffee House sponsored three of the successful singers: Amado Cacho, who placed second in the pop category and fourth in the country category; Brenda Garcia, 10th in female pop category; and Tianna, seventh in female country and 18th in female pop. Cacho also has just been named the newest member of popular island band Krush.

Chez in Pearl City sponsored singer Derrick Vaughn, who took first place in the male pop division.

You can hear these outstanding performers Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. as Wailana celebrates their victories with heavy pupu, music and cocktails.

Wailana Coffee House hosts nightly karaoke in its lounge (except Tuesdays and Thursdays) from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Pupu and cocktails are available in the lounge, as is the regular restaurant menu.

Wailana Coffee House is known for its inexpensive, great-value menu and for serving one of Hawaii’s only all-day (and night) breakfasts.

Sad news At Shanghai Bistro.

Latest in a long line of local restaurants to close their doors is the beautiful Chinese-fusion restaurant Shanghai Bistro.

According to owner Li May Tang, Shanghai Bistro did not meet projections from resident and visitor traffic.

“Although highly acclaimed for Chef Chih-Chieh Chang’s beautiful and creative food,” says Tang,“and the awards we won for the decor of the restaurant, meal counts were very disappointing.”

Shanghai Bistro, located within the Discovery Bay Center, also was a victim of rising rent costs.

“It no longer made business sense to keep the restaurant open,” Tang says.

Tang also owns Hong Kong Harbor View Seafood Restaurant in Aloha Tower Marketplace and Royal Yakiniku in Waikiki, both of which are highly successful restaurants and will continue operations.

“I could not continue to underwrite Shanghai Bistro, as much as I loved it, with money from my other two restaurants,” Tang says. She added that Chef Chang will continue to work for her at her two other restaurants, as will most of the employees, who will be transferred. Shanghai Bistro will honor gift certificates at Tang’s other restaurant locations.
