Dion Dizon has her plate full as chairwoman of the 2010 Ko Olina Taste at Kapolei. From creating a plan of action to helping team leaders move things forward and even serving as a mode of inspiration to her community, the busy mother of two has been working non-stop to ensure this year’s event goes off without a hitch.

And for good reason.

“The Ko Olina Taste at Kapolei is helping more young people from our community realize the dream of college by offering them scholarship money,” says Dizon, a 1994 graduate of Waianae High School who, through scholarships, was able to attend her dream school, the American University of Paris in France.

“It was an amazing experience,” Dizon says. “I can relate to these students because I am a product of West Oahu ... I feel it is only fair that if I am in a position to contribute to the community that has afforded me my success, then it is only right to give back.”

Dizon is a member of the Rotary Club of Kapolei, the group of volunteers that for the past decade has put on the popular culinary event that features some of the best grindz from the island’s top restaurants. A sampling of this year’s lineup includes Formaggio Grill, Auntie Pasto’s, P.F. Chang’s, Hapa Grill, Highway Inn, Soul Patrol and Da Pokeman Fish Market. Chefs Chai Chaowasaree, Russell Siu, Scott Higa, Elmer Guzman, Ed Kenney, Dean Okimoto and Abigail Langlas also will be on hand preparing special dishes in the VIP section.

“I am looking forward to seeing people come together, enjoying the time of their lives, savoring signature dishes of top chefs and restaurants while raising scholarship money for aspiring college students,” says Dizon. “I have really been trying to use this time as an opportunity to emphasize to other volunteers that there are positive consequences for actions.”

The 11th annual Ko Olina Taste at Kapolei takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at Ko Olina Resort and Marina’s Ulua Lagoon. Tickets are on sale now at Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt locations at Kapolei Commons, Ward Warehouse and the Town Center of Mililani, or online at hawaiisbesttickets.com.

Adult admission is $75 presale, $90 at the door. Children ages 7-12 get in for $35. Sponsorship and VIP options also are available. Call 545-2772 or visit KapoleiHIRotary.ClubWizard.com.
