Stuntman Al Furuto made his debut in Karate Kid ll two decades ago. He’s a proud Saint Louis alumnus and busy with McCully neighborhood board activities. Al’s an expert in the art of the Japanese Tameshigiri, which is a deadly art of swordplay. Worked alongside Tamlyn Tomita, Kate Beckingsale, Sharon Stone, Ben Affleck, Robert Mitchum and Mel Gibson over the years. Al is probably the only person in Hawaii to belong to both unions, Screen Actors Guild and The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees ...

Racheal Austin-Harmes was born in Australia and spent her teens in Hawaii. I met her at an acting seminar years ago, and among all the new actors there Rachael performed like a veteran. She attended Moanalua High School, but graduated from Notre Dame College in her hometown of Melbourne. She’s currently on the set of The Killing by British filmmaker Andrew Piddington. This is Rachael’s first-ever film credit, but I can definitely see more on the horizon ...

Aloha from Sofia, Bulgaria, where premier costume designer Cathie Valdovino is wrapping on the set of The Contract. The film stars John Cusack and Morgan Freeman and is directed by famed Aussie fillmaker Bruce Beresford. Cathie has worked among Hollywood’s best, including Hilary Swank, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Clint Eastwood, Josh Hartnett, Robert Redford and Bruce Willis. Her amazing talent was honed at Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. Cathie’s designs were seen in award-winning films, most notably in Million Dollar Baby. Her period piece wardrobe was magnificent in award-winning feature The Ride by Nathan Kurosawa. The film brought back images of Hawaii from 1911. Cathie’s in high demand, and I’m sure that she’s going to be leaving on a jet soon to an exotic locale somewhere in the world ...

Photographer Rick Bernico is a graduate of Hawaii Pacific University. He has a knack for discovering talent and helps aspiring pageant contestants who strive to enter competitions. He has an extensive web-site called “Hawaii Profiles” at www.hawaiiprofiles.com. His company is dedicated to promoting actors, models, musicians and events. Rick is a former Navy nuclear reactor operator. Scary line of work, if you ask me. He mentioned he wanted to get away as far as possible. I don’t blame him. His favorite entertainer is singer Seiko Matsuda, and he loves chocolate chip mint ice cream. Hawaii Profiles is also an online photo magazine. If you’d like to get some publicity, he’s looking for aspiring hosts, writers, TV and video personalities. Check it out ...
