the Universe

Congratulations to filmmaker Gerard Elmore on winning the Best Short Film Award at the 2005 Hawaii International Film Festival for Valtor the Great Vs. the Universe. Honolulu Magazine editor A. Kam Napier presented a check for $2,500 to Gerard, who did a Tom Cruise thing onstage without a couch. Golden Maile Awards hosts Roger Ebert and actress Elizabeth Lindsey looked amused. In the audience cheering were the cast and crew of Valtor, lead actor Jaeves Iha, Lew Lappert, cinematographer Vince Keala Lucero and producers Yuri Biersach and yours truly ... Actor Jason New flew in from Los Angeles to make the rounds at the HIFF industry mixers. He’s in town with girlfriend Tina Nishimoto, who graduated from Maryknoll.

Jason was the envy of all actors in Hawaii when he landed the role of hunky “Lorenzo,” who was the groom of Pamela Anderson in Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding. Jason wants to work in some indie films locally. He commented on the excellent quality of local films he’s seen so far at HIFF. I heard he received some offers already ... Also here from Hollywood promoting her latest film Grandma’s Recipe is film-maker Imelda Betiong. The movie stars Charlotte Dias, Mane, Laine Kaneshiro, Suzanne Sorensen and Maui Laigo. The movie was produced by Bonnie Murakami, Lena Kaneshiro and shot by cinematographer Anthony Hahn. Imelda works on the series Alias starring Jennifer Garner. She brought me a omiyage of Jennifer’s autographed head-shot. Thanks Imelda! Her other recent film, To Kill A Mole, was screened earlier this year at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. The film stars Sacred Hearts Academy freshman Kailey Kaneshiro. I’ll be updating you on Kailey in the near future ... The Governor’s Ball at Washington Place was a smorgasbord of movie deals being made. Of course, Gov. Linda Lingle was there to open her home for the evening. Enjoying the evening were actors Sonny Chiba, Rena Owen, Ioulia Alcorn, Malia Ho, Zero, film-makers Anne Misawa, Leizel Olegario, Sandi Schneiderman, Ryan Kawamoto, Scott Lee Mason, James Sereno, Titus Chong and Dusty Cross. I’ll be covering the up and coming auteurs from the Academy of Creative Media from University of Hawaii Manoa individually. Another highlight was the spread of delicacies. I overloaded on the sushi and poke. This event was part of the Hawaii International Film Festival celebrating its 25th year ...
