Jeff Ferris, host of ‘SmashBrain,” is a newlywed
Congratulations to Jeff Ferris on his marriage to longtime sweetheart Shelley. They tied the knot on Halloween night in Las Vegas. Now that’s what I’m talking about! At Mipcom’s inaugural Mobile TV Awards, CinemaElectric’s SmashBrain was an award-winner. An international jury selected the winners from 23 nominated shows. Jeff was the host for SmashBrain, which won the best-made-for-cell-phone TV show. The awards ceremony took place in Cannes, France, and was emceed by former MTV-Europe VJ Ray Cokes. Jeff is one of the best pro skate-boarders in the world. He’s also an excellent actor. My favorite role of Jeff’s is in Men of Action, where he played a hilarious wannabe action hero. The movie won Best Short Film at the 2003 New York International Independent Film Festival. The movie was directed by USC Film School graduate Todd Grossman.
Next up for Jeff is hopefully getting a role in a much-talked-about Hawaii film indie ... Actor Bill Carr was recently seen on the big screen at the premiere of Piko by filmmaker Hyun Shin. The movie was produced by Jose Corpus. Bill played the father of the lead played by Mariko Oshiro. His favorite actress is his wife, Meryle Carr, who also starred in the film. The rest of the cast includes Louanna Look-Pacheco, Harmony Pacheco and Andrew Ma. Bill is an isle veteran of both stage and screen. He holds a master’s degree in theatre from University of Hawaii at Manoa. Last season he starred in the stage play Endgame at The Actors’ Group. The production was directed by Liz Kane and featured Tim Dyke, Edward Earl Pickard and Laurie Tanoura. Bill received an “Excellence in Service” Award from the Hawaii State Theatre Council last year. ... Model Ashley Kiara Smith caught my eye at recent acting seminar. Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, and raised in the little town of Buena Vista, Ga. She won the 2004 Young Miss Hawaiian Tropics Pageant, winning the “Most Photogenic” award too. She is a Pearl Harbor Elementary School sixth-grader. Ashley would like to follow in the acting footsteps of Halle Berry. She takes acting classes with Doris Miocinovic at Barbizon Hawaii and Wayne Ward at Actors’ Performance. Her objective is to be successful in the entertainment industry. Good luck, Ashley! ... The 10th Annual Mea No’eau Award Show was held at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, Doris Duke Theatre. HIFF executive director Chuck Boller and producer Dave Rosen opened the evening welcoming colleagues, followed by Mayor Mufi Hannemann with encouraging words regarding the tremendous growth of local film industry. The event culminated with a reception at T.G.I. Friday’s ...
