Actor Don Stroud, Teri Stroud and yours truly

The O Lounge one-year anniversary party was wall-to-wall with who’s who of the business and entertainment world. Owner Liz Hata-Watanabe celebrated with celebrities Jasmine Trias, Cathy Tanaka, Nicole Moani Taylor, Radasha Ho’ohuli, Alan Arato, Joey Calderone, Gerard Elmore, Lew Lappert, Kalai Miller, Russell Tanoue and Don and Teri Stroud. The event was promoted by Lincoln Jacobe of Pacific Entertainment. Gorgeous and talented Sherry Shaoling provided the sizzle factor. Actors Zero, Jesse Smith, Mike Nakada, Ron Lake, James Hadde, Al Furuto, Bill and Meryle Carr, Laine Yoshioka, Linda Jackson and Kalai Kamauoha were also enjoying the festivities. Jay Hubert is originally from Texas and graduated from Rice University with a B.S. in engineering. Three of the eight films he made have premiered at the Hawaii International Film Festival. My favorite film of Jay’s is Tunnels, a story about a young Korean-Japanese couple, Miho and Kazu, quietly living in Hawaii. Their past life consisted of discrimination and violence. Jay is fluent in Japanese and Mandarin Chinese and currently pursuing a master’s degree in Asian studies at UH-Manoa. He then plans to attend Beijing Film Academy to pursue his M.F.A. His favorites are Gina’s BBQ, curry, actors Renee Zellweger and Kaneshiro Takeshi, and film-makers Wong Kar Wai, Guy Ritchie and Christopher Doyle. Among the many things he does when he’s not editing is learn new languages, play ultimate frisbee, play guitar or piano. Of the many films I’ve seen at HIFF last month, Jay’s rank up there with the best ...

University of Hawaii’s Academy for Creative Media recently held casting calls at several campus locations. A big mahalo to assistant professor Joel Moffet, who headed these unprecedented auditions for local actors. Nick Gianforti, Dezmond Gilla, Jaeves Iha, Lew Lappert, Jeremiah Tayao, Zero, Lena Kaneshiro, Mane, Tracy Mattos, Jeannette Roberts and Laine Yoshioka took advantage of the opportunity. ACM produces 100 plus films per year and many are screened in major film festivals. With quality movies coming from ACM filmmakers, local actors should think twice before heading out to Tinseltown now. The grass is not always greener in smogland ...

I met Jacqui Willig in acting class a decade ago when she was 13. She’s currently attending Leeward Community College studying set design. Jacqui’s a St. Francis School alumna. She enjoys all Tim Burton movies, writing poetry and composing music. A self-described old soul, as a child she used to stay awake so she could watch Get Smart. She studied acting with Paul Cravath and Wayne Ward. I had a chance to see one of her works at the Steel Train music video at Paliku Theatre. The creation was a moving bedroom on a platform with a bed, nightstand and window. Also a humongous caterpillar on a large stone that smoked. Seeing that, I know Jacqui will be successful as Hawaii’s next young set designer ...
