‘Only the Brave’ filmmaker Lane Nishikawa
and yours truly at Sunset on the Beach

Filmmaker Lane Nishikawa was in town at the Sunset on the Beach event in Waikiki. He was promoting his film Only the Brave, featuring Jennifer Aquino, Takayo Fischer, Gina Hiraizumi, Emily Liu, Michael Hagiwara, Ken Narasaki, Garret Sato and the late Pat Morita. Lane is literally flying all over the Mainland going from one film festival to another. The story is about the sacrifices of the 100th Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in the epic rescue of the 141st Texas Regiment in the Vosges Mountains in France. This battle was one of most critical of World War II that turned the tide in favor of the U.S. The evening was kicked off by Mayor Mufi Hannemann, a staunch supporter of the local movie industry. Ikaika Communications president Mona Wood deserves a big mahalo for another successful show. Lane’s previous film Forgotten Valor, starring Soon-Tek Oh and Kipp Shiotani, won the Blockbuster Video Audience Award for Best Short Film at the 2001 Hawaii International Film Festival ...

Best of wishes to B.K. Cannon, who made the move to Hollywood with mom, Trudi Cannon. B.K. was one of the three local actors chosen as cast members for Flight 29 Down. The other notables are Tani Lynn Fujimoto and Blade Rogers, son of acting coach Scott Rogers. It’s great we have two TV series filmed here employing local talent. Unlike most teenagers, B.K. likes classics like Casablanca or any Alfred Hitchcock movie. When B.K. and Trudi get settled in their new surroundings, I’ll do a follow-up on her career ...

Where is he now? Former Hawaii actor Ryan Calder is in Canada where he shined in the movie Appearances by director Rob Wenzek. Co-stars were Mike Wiskar and Ryan Hoben. I recently saw him in Hopeless in Honolulu by filmmaker Ryan Ishii at the 2005 HIFF. His character was right on the money as the smarmy ladies’ man. The film was produced by Nelson Quan and stars Richard Nip, Shawna Washabaugh, Karim Cervantes, Cassandra Eaton and Mapuana Makia ...

Promoter James Moravec is showcasing Scratch DJ QBert at the Winter Remedy at the “W” Hotel. It’s this Saturday, the 17th, slated to go from 9 p.m. to 2 in the morning. Co-promoted by Raph Dang, Komo Low and Mike Moravec, the event will feature models Sasha Singleton and

Christine Mendoza. James and brother Mike own the urban streetwear clothing store Flipside. You have to check out this store for incredible threads and one-of-a-kind shoes. Many Japanese celebrities are loyal customers. On a rare day off, James likes to hang out at Imanas Tei. The restaurant is always incredibly busy, so I’ll just say it’s near Puck’s Alley ...
