The 2006 ‘Ohina Short Film Showcase at the Doris Duke Theatre in the Honolulu Academy of Arts was a tremendous success last weekend! A great venue for local filmmakers and actors to maximize their visibility. Jason Suapaia, Jeff Katts and Ryan Kawamoto are the ingredients to the success that began in 1999. Spotted in the audience enjoying the evening were Don and Teri Stroud, James and Lisa Sereno, Burton and Sarah Richardson, Vince and Lori Dydasco, Jose Corpus, Edison Erorita, Stu Hirayama, Mark Malalis, Alan Mueting, Nelson Pires, Scott Francis Russell, Anna Fernandez, Cheryl Cruz, Ivy Castellanos, Kimi Tupoula, Laine Yoshioka, Mahealani Diego, Serena Karnegy, Sherry Shaoling, Tiffany Tudor and Tracy Mattos. Boy, were there a lot of people there - a full house, to be exact. We all headed to the O Lounge after the screening. Thanks to Liz Hata-Watanabe, who sponsored the private after party ...
Celebrating birthdays this week are industry celebs Cheryl Andaya, Lena Kaneshiro, Erika Rochane, Amy Tamaribuchi, Tiffany Tudor, Jacqui Willig, Katie Young, Charlie Garrett and Vince Keala Lucero. Thank you all for supporting the arts and the local entertainment industry ...
And the hits keep coming for actor Dezmond Gilla, on the silver screen once again at the 2006 ‘Ohina Short Film Showcase. He was the lead character Jimmy Renegade in the festival trailer. Rounding out the cast are Charlotte Dias, Libette Garcia, Olena Rubin, Laine Yoshioka, Brian Ashak, Mark Ganialongo, Kua Kekuewa, Lew Lappert, Shiloh and Matthew Thompson. Dez is a graduate of UH-Manoa and an Aiea High School alumnus. He stars with buddy Steve Boatright in The Cleaner by Martin Troy. At the 2005 Hawaii International Film Festival, Dez was in both Seong Kyu Whang’s Elevation and Ryan Kawamoto’s Sand Island Drive-In Anthem. Currently on TV is the Island Air commercial by director Brett Wagne, which stars Dez as “Interisland Steve.” And the hits will certainly continue for this talented actor ...
Popular indie actors Lew
Lappert and Dezmond Gilla at
the ‘Ohina Short Film Showcase
Lew Lappert is one of the most-sought-after actors by local filmmakers. He’s become famous for playing quirky and off-beat characters. He is originally from Connecticut, but a longtime resident of Kailua. His breakout role came as the homeless man in The Orb by Scott Mason. Lew also stars as the evil Lord John Wharfin in the ‘Ohina trailer. I saw him onstage at the Lanikai Mortgage Players’ production of Blazing Guns at Roaring Gulch. Very charismatic performance. Working as a sculptor took Lew through Europe where he picked up language skills in Spanish, Italian, German and French. He was at ‘Ohina representing Gerard Elmore‘s award-winning Valtor The Great Vs. The Universe. His posse included Jaeves Iha, Christian Zuckerman, Matthew Thompson and Renee Garcia. Lew’s favorites are Thai food at Chai’s Island Bistro, and John Frankenheimer movies. Next up for Lew? More roles in indie films, of course ...
