Back In The Classroom

U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Akaka (with lei) served as a guest teacher for eighth-grade math students April 26 at Kawananakoa Middle School as part of national Teach For America Week. Akaka taught a lesson on financial literacy in Teach For America corps member Jacob Johnson’s classroom. Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity.

A Youth’s Generosity

Instead of birthday presents, Keli Santos, daughter of Drew and Shirley Santos who turned 10 years old May 1, asked her friends and family for donations to the American Red Cross, Japan Relief Fund. Keli (left) donated $1,176 to the relief fund.

A Symphonic Donation For ARC

The Hawaii Youth Symphony recently raised $19,360.20 for the American Red Cross, Japan Relief fund at a concert where, instead of charging admission, attendees were asked to make a donation. The idea to host this fundraiser was based on several HYS students who wanted to do something to help the people of Japan. More than 2,000 people attended. Pictured (from left) are maestro Henry Miyamura, HYS music director; Gabby Perry, Youth Symphony I tuba player; Coralie Chun Matayoshi, CEO American Red Cross, and Chris Yuen, HYS president.
