Japanese Halau Wins Competition

Japan’s Halau Ka Liko Pua O Kalaniakea was selected recently as the overall winner and first-place recipient in the group wahine category for the Hula Hoolauna Aloha Festival 2010, which featured a hula competition among 10 halau and three solo competitors visiting from Japan. Now in its ninth year, the Hula Hoolauna Aloha Festival celebrates the rich traditions and vibrant history of one of Hawaii’s most beloved customs while uniting two cultures through dance and friendship.

Reading Program Honors Finalists

Twenty-two Oahu grand-prize finalists of the 2010 Hawaii State Public Library System and Hawaii Pizza Hut Teen Summer Reading Finale were honored recently in a program at Kahala Mall Center Court. Joining them in the celebration are state librarian Richard Burns, Karen Joy Gaspar of Hawaii Pizza Hut, and Jordan Segundo (emcee). The Friends of the Library of Hawaii are the overall sponsors of the annual HSPLS Summer Reading Programs, which are offered to children (including infants and toddlers), teens and adults, respectively.

Palama Settlement Receives $250,000

Palama Settlement recently received a generous grant distribution from the Alexander C. Waterhouse Charitable Trust in the amount of $250,000, making this the largest single private financial support received to date. This contribution will be used to support four of Palama Settlement’s vital programs that provide services, activities and support to low-income, at-risk children, adults, and families living in the neighborhoods of Palama and Kalihi.
