Dr. John Kaya
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

Where and with whom did you see the movie?

I went to the Ward 16 Consolidated Theatres. I went to the afternoon show with my 4-year-old daughter Jada. In general, when we go to the movies, she falls asleep three-fourths into the movie, but she stayed awake for the whole movie, so I know she liked it.

Overall, what did you think?

Very good. If I anticipate a lot, I think I’m not going to enjoy it. But I was thinking, ‘Wow, could a movie based just on him be just as good as the Shrek movies?’ But it was very good.

On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film?

★★★1/2, almost ★★★★

Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes?

There were a lot of scenes that took time to develop for the humor, and there were also some quick humor scenes. One that I really enjoyed was when he ordered a drink at the bar, and it looked like it came in a shot glass, so i thought it was going to be alcohol. But it was milk, and instead of shooting it down like a person would, he lapped it like a cat would. I watch my cats drink water, and I think, ‘Are they even getting anything?’ He kind of licked for a while, and it barely went down.

Did any of the characters stand out?

I guess the main character, Puss In Boots. It was based around him, but the supporting cast was really good. They had Kitty Softpaws and Humpty Dumpty. They were a really good supporting cast.

Did the soundtrack contribute significantly to the film?

It was very good. There were some scenes that featured music. There was a fight scene, and there was a lot of music in that, so the soundtrack definitely added to the movie.

Would you buy this movie when it comes out on DVD?

Clearly yes because I have kids. So whatever movie we see, Jada likes it.

I would definitely buy it and watch it at home, but it’s a family thing for my kids.

Was the movie as good as the previews made it out to be?

Sometimes what happens is the best parts of the movie is what they put on the previews, but there were a lot of good things still in the movie. They didn’t just take the good parts and throw them in the previews. There were a lot of other funny parts.

Did you identify with any of the characters?

I guess if i had to pick one, it would be Puss In Boots because he’s the main character. He’s the cool cat, he’s the skilled swordsman, he’s the one with high integrity and good morals. But sometimes his actions are misunderstood. He’s a very likeable character.

What’s your favorite movie snack?

I guess it would have to be popcorn. First, we always buy it when we go to the movies. Second, in general we don’t go out and buy popcorn, so we usually reserve popcorn for the movie shows.

On a different note, what’s new with you?

Well, I’m working on a couple of books. One is a compilation of my favorite columns I write for MidWeek, and the other is a fictional adventure for kids that has to do with animals and people and our connection with animals. But it’s in the theme of Harry Potter meets Dr. Doolittle meets the Boy Scouts in a nutshell. But I’m only 30 percent done. No time with kids. (laughs)
