SOMEONE NEW moves to Las Vegas every six minutes, and a new house is completed every 20 minutes, making the ninth island the fastest-growing city in the United States. But the one thing the oasis in the desert does not have is a pro team of any kind. No NBA, NFL or MLB. Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has contacted the San Diego Chargers about becoming the Las Vegas Chargers, and starting Jan. 1 the Chargers can entertain all offers from any U.S. city ... how about the Honolulu Chargers?
MEANWHILE, the Los Angeles Lakers have announced a multi-year relationship (Does this mean they are going steady now?) with the Mirage Hotel. It will be the official destination hotel of the Lakers when the team arrives for some preseason play in October, and will host the team for the All Star Game.
WILL A pro sports team ever call Vegas home? Will Internet gaming ever become legal? Will sports betting on the Internet become legal? My money’s on all three happening in our lifetime because there’s just too much money involved. Last year the 2,400 Internet gaming sites grossed about $12 billion - that’s twice the money made on the famous Strip.
LAS VEGAS has been officially crowned America’s Convention Capital by Tradeshow Week. Last year it hosted 44 of the 206 biggest U.S. conventions. In second place: Orlando, which hosted 26.
