WELCOME to Kimo’s Vegas ... The Player’s Edge!

ONE OF THE cool things about Vegas is running into old friends ... in town for the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery’s 36th annual symposium, Dr. Kevin Lye ran into high school buddy (Castle grad) Mae Russell, the marketing manager for The Palms Hotel & Casino. The good doctor also had a close encounter with another beauty, heiress Paris Hilton. Hey, “What Happens in Vegas ...”

SOLD TO TLC! The new owner of Binion’s loves downtown as much as us Hawaiians - after years of neglect, $10 million in new slot machines, room refurbs and other upgrades are under way as you read this, and that’s in addition to the $32 million purchase price. “Mr. TLC” Terry Caudill’s resume includes craps dealer, casino president and the current owner of the Four Queens.

CELEBRATING THE 20th anniversary of his first restaurant, Chef Roy Yamaguchi is launching a nine-city Anniversary Culinary Tour that started in Orlando, stops in Vegas (April 8) and ends where it all began, here in Honolulu, Oct. 4 and 5. The local boy, who won the James Beard “Best Pacific Northwest Chef” award, now has 34 eateries worldwide in 11 states, Japan and Guam. He says, “Since the opening of my first restaurant in Honolulu in 1988, I have always strived to create an alternative to the ordinary and the expected.”

WOLFGANG PUCK’S CUT is open at the Palazzo ... the second location of the award-winning Beverly Hills steak house was named one of the top three steak houses in America by Bon Appétit magazine. On the menu: USDA Prime Nebraska corn-fed, 35-day dry-aged steaks, 100 percent Wagyu Beef from the Kagoshima Prefecture, Kobe Beef Short Ribs and more.

AUWE! Harrah’s has laid off almost 100 people, MGM Mirage almost 150, and 68 got pink-slipped at Planet Hollywood.

THE LAS VEGAS Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) has just announced a new $12 million advertising campaign designed to boost the city’s slumping economy ... “Vegas Right Now” will target residents of Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta and Dallas.

PENN JILLETTE (the speaking half) of the Rio’s Penn & Teller magic team is running eight miles a day and practicing five hours a day in preparation of his debut on Dancing with the Stars (tonight on KITV). He’s already lost 47 pounds, but says “I’m a bit over 6 feet 6 inches and she is 5 feet 7 inches, and that is a tremendous disadvantage.”

EXPERTS SAY the Neon City will be neon-less by 2012 because neon-less casinos and signs are using newer “smart” big-screen technology.

JAMES FUKUDA of Honolulu won $2,030, Earl Sarono of Ewa Beach won $2,524 and Chiyoko Kami of Hilo won $4,000 playing video poker at the Cal. And a high-five and hearty congrats to Albert Hamada, who won $21,000 playing Let It Ride at the Cal.
