WELCOME to Kimo’s Vegas ... The Player’s Edge!
THE STARS came out for last week’s Joe Calzaghe-Bernard Hopkins fight including Mr. and Mrs. Jay-Z, actors Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Jim Belushi and Catherine Zeta-Jones, singer Tom Jones, entertainment mogul Simon Cowell and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Joneses came to watch fellow Welshman Calzaghe (44-0, 32 KO’s) bring home the championship belt and secure his position as the country’s most successful sportsman.
WORTH EVERY PENNY ... every year the industry magazine Restaurants & Institutions publishes a list of the 100 top-grossing restaurants in the U.S. For the second year in a row, TAO Las Vegas was No. 1 with $66.6 million in total food and beverage sales last year. Even more amazing is that TAO seats only 400 for dinner, compared to 1,500 at second place NYC’s Tavern on the Green. Twenty-four of the list’s single-location, independently owned eateries are found in Vegas.
COMING LATER THIS FALL ... new slot machines based on the longest-running North American science fiction series on television, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.
COMING UP AT THE CAL ... The 11th annual Lei Day Festival May 3 and 4 with Hawaiian crafters and artisans and the music of Tony Conjugacion, Holunape, Kawika Regidor, Kevin and Ikaika Brown and David and Dennis Kamakahi. Look for Hawaiian 105 KINE wake-up guy Billy V broadcasting live from the California Hotel’s casino (right next to the buffet). Some of his guests include Punahou grad Sara Harding (now a performer in KA!), Kamehameha grad Melle Vasquez (lead guitarist in Zumanity) and more.
THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOW is taping a special at Caesars Palace Colosseum in Vegas Saturday (April 26) featuring exclusive performances with Cher and Tina Turner. Also known as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, the eight-time Grammy winner Turner has sold more concert tickets than any other solo performer ever. Will she be added to the Bette Midler, Cher, Elton John rotation? We’ll have to watch May 8 for the answer.
CRISS ANGEL’S new Cirque du Soleil show Believe previews Sept. 1 (for true believers) and officially opens Sept. 12 at the Luxor. What can you expect from the first Cirque du Soleil show to feature a single performer? “Believe will be a haunting exploration deep inside the inventive mind of mystifier Criss Angel as he hovers between the land of the living and a surreal world uniquely woven together by the distinctive imaginations of Criss Angel and Cirque du Soleil.” Must be one of those you gotta see it to believe it things. Get the hookup for preview tickets at www.KimosVegas.com
DUST OFF THE leather and polish your studs ... Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars are reuniting for a new album, Saints of Los Angeles, and the “Crüe Fest Tour” that begins July 1 with a stop in Vegas a month later. Since their 1981 union, Mötley Crüe has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide.
MORE BAD NEWS for John O’ Hurley ... Not only did his new show, Secret Star Talents of the Stars, get pink-slipped by CBS-TV, but Steve Wynn said aloha to Spamalot at the Wynn. Broadway bites another one in the desert July 13 when the musical closes after just 15 months only to be replaced by longtime Wynn buddy and Mirage headliner Danny Gans. If you know someone with a Nevada ID, you can get 2-for-1 Spamalot tickets from the box office using the code “anniversary.”
