WELCOME to Kimo’s Vegas ... The Player’s Edge!
MORE THAN 80 people bought into the second annual “Ante Up For Africa” for $5,000. Part of the 2008 World Series of Poker, Annie Duke (pro poker player) and Don Cheadle (actor) hosted the event to raise money and awareness for the Not On Our Watch (NOOW) and ENOUGH Darfur charities. Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jason Alexander, George Lopez, Adam Sandler and Ray Romano were among the celebs playing in the tourney. The players all signed a pledge donating a portion of their winnings to the benefit, because it’s against Nevada law to designate a specific portion of a poker tournament’s prize money to charity.
NOW THAT the World Series of Poker has begun officially, so have the side or prop bets between the players ... Daniel Negreanu said, “Last year me, Phil Ivey and Erick Lindgren bet $10,000 each, first one to shuffle their chips lost. So like you couldn’t shuffle your chips for the whole month - at all. I won that one.”
DON’T DRINK the water ... The troubled Tropicana’s Island Tower was shut down last week after traces of the E. coli bacteria were found in the water. The routine test forced 500 guests to other rooms and resorts while the hotel switched from a mix of well and municipal water to using the city’s municipal water exclusively.
NOW OPEN at Treasure Island ... the new $40 million Christian Audigier The Nightclub. Modern-day vampires should feel right at home in the highly stylized club that’s heavy on tattoos, skulls, roses, velvet crush drapes, black glass chandeliers and faux croc leather ...
A FAVORITE celebrity eatery is Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab in the Caesars Palace Forum Shops. A single claw of its famous stone crab can run more than $12 ... Is that because they have to catch twice as many crabs because they only take one claw? They leave one claw on each crab so the crustacean can defend itself while it grows a replacement claw in about a year or two.
NOW OPEN at the new Town Square shopping mall, the 12th location of Southern California, Kabuki Japanese Restaurant chain.
SEVEN OUT ... Linda Ann Hopkins Shapiro’s Party Pit at the Hard Rock. Tera Patrick is out and her pit is being renamed and rethemed before it opens. Some speculate that it could have crossed the fine line between gaming and prostitution.
NICE WORK if you can get it ... The semi-retired ex-MGM Mirage/Golden Nugget casino boss Dan Shumny is in town chill-in’ for the summer ... His ex-bosses Tim Poster and Tom Breitling - the guys who built and sold Travelscape to Expedia then bought and later sold the Golden Nugget - are now joining the Wynn Resorts as senior vice presidents of strategy and development. According to Steve Wynn: “This is a very exciting time for our company as we prepare to expand both here in Las Vegas and in Asia. Until now, we’ve only been limited by our human capital and our limited capacity to design, develop and operate resorts that live up to our standards. With the addition of Tim and Tom to our leadership team, we have both improved our opportunities for success with our existing ventures and enhanced our ability to pursue new ones.”
Could another reality TV show be in the works?
