Sheldon and Miriam Adelson

SHELDON ADELSON, the third-richest man in America last year, has lost $13 billion (yep, that’s billion with a “b”) since October 2007. Shares in his company, Las Vegas Sands, the owner of Venetian and Palazzo, have dropped 65 percent. Don’t feel too sorry for him - he’s still worth more than $26 billion and is the 12th richest man on the Forbes list.

IN THE SHOPPES at The Palazzo, you’ll find Bauman Rare Books. If the Vegas store seems familiar, it’s because it’s a duplicate of the one on Madison Avenue. Bring along your black AMEX because the goods in this bookstore don’t come cheap ... A first-edition account of Lewis & Clark’s Expedition will set you back $250,000. It also buys and sells rare books online (like your great-grandmother’s Japanese photo album from 1890 for $3,500).

BROKE DA MOUT ... Big names with eateries opening in the new Aria Hotel Casino: Michael Mina (Sea Blue, Nobhill and Stripsteak), Julian Serrano (Picasso), famous pastry chef Jean-Phillipe Maury (Patisserie in Bellagio) and Masayoshi Takayama from “Masa” in New York. At least we’ll have until next year to save for it.

MANY OF US loved eating those fresh-from-the-oven Krispy Kreme doughnuts you could get at the Fitz. They became so popular almost everyone would bring home a couple dozen for omiyage. As we became more health-conscious, sales of the snack declined, and to turn sales around, the company is adding soft-serve ice cream to the menu ... Now that’s gonna be more difficult to bring home.

Justin Timberlake

THE 2008 JUSTIN TIMBER-LAKE Shriners Hospitals for Children Open starts Oct. 13 at TPC Summerlin. Pros signed to compete in this official PGAevent include Woody Austin, Mark Calcavecchia, David Duval, Charles Howell III, Zach Johnson, Rory Sabbatini and D.J. Trahan.

THE QUARTER WHEEL OF FORTUNE at the Luxor made a Los Angeles fast-food manager a millionaire when he deposited $20 and won $1,535,315, saying “I had a dream the other night that I would win, and I was so excited when it happened. I just could not believe it.”... That never works for me!

Terry Fator

AT THE ORLEANS Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, a woman walked away from the Wheel of Fortune penny video slot machine she was playing. Just before she did, she asked the man next to her how she could tell if she hit the jackpot ... “He told me to keep an eye on the middle line and watch for five Wheel of Fortune signs all lined up in a row.

I had decided to walk away from the machine, but after a while, I opted to come back and play some more. That was the best decision I ever made.” The winner, originally from Korea, said she is going to pay off her car, house, help her family and make a donation to her church with the $6,978,752.98 jackpot!

DEFINE POWER COUPLE ... Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman’s term is up in 2011, but he already knows who should replace him - his wife, Carolyn Goodman. Hiz Honor also is said to be considering a run for the governor’s office before his term expires.

ONE OF THE FUNNIEST Vegas shows is absolutely free ... Check out Bobby Slayton at Hooters. Tickets for “the pit bull of comedy” are free when you sign up for the casino’s players’ card.

JERRY SPRINGER and America’s Got Talent will come to Las Vegas Oct. 17 for a live show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. On stage: the winner of season two, Terry Fator, and the soon-to-be-announced 2008 winner. Tickets to your favorite TV show are on sale now.
