WELCOME TO the MidWeek edition of Kimo’s Vegas. Starting with this issue look for twice the Vegas news and info with a new column in MidWeek and MidWeek—The Weekend each week!

Tony Bennett returns to the Golden Nugget
Memorial Day weekend

EVERYONE KNOWS it’s illegal to own a slot machine in the state of Hawaii. But you can own a piece of your favorite slot machine. Just do an eBay search for “slot machine glass” and you might find the glass panel from your favorite slot machine. Some people frame these with a light behind the glass to hang on a wall, and some make jewelry boxes. “Slot Machine Art” can be a cool reminder of a memorable trip or a big win.

I’M TOLD plenty Hawaii residents forget the new rules, no lighters on the plane … “lose money” (a bad sign before boarding the plane).

WHAT HAPPENS to babies born in Las Vegas’ birthday month? Every baby born in Vegas this month gets a bunch of presents including a centennial birth certificate personally signed by Mayor Oscar Goodman … wonder if they told him they’re expecting 2,000 babies to be born in May!

CASTLE HIGH’s Class of ’58 celebrates members’ 65th birthdays together at the California Hotel on Oct. 2-5. HAWAIIAN 105 KINE’s Uncle Sam Kapu told me that growing up his two idols were Foster Brooks and Tony Bennett … he wanted to be able to drink like Foster and sing like Tony! His idol Tony Bennett returns to the Golden Nugget Memorial Day weekend (May 27-29) … Everybody Loves Raymond’s Ray Romano at the Mirage May 20 and 21 … Robert Plant at the Las Vegas Hilton July 16.

FARRINGTON GRAD Ginalyn Obiano writes to say all is well in Vegas but she misses her family and friends. So what does a sistah do when she’s homesick? Go to the Cal and hang with the locals … gambling, eating and talking pidgin!

George Nitta with his $10,000
machine at the Palms

CONGRATS TO George Nitta of Honolulu, who won $10,000 on a Ten Times pay machine at the Palms.

SPEAKING OF cooking, award-winning master chef Richard Sandoval is a guacamole fanatic. At La Isla, his Mexican restaurant in the TI, they have a guacamole cart that features his personal favorite “Lobster Guacamole.” He says in a pinch (bad pun intended) you can use crab as well.

KIMO’S VEGAS is on the air Thursday at 9 a.m. on KKEA1420 AM. We’ll talk story with slot machine designer Allon Englman, who gets paid to play slots (and keep the winnings).

Where do I sign up for that job?

“WE GOT an education in 1992 when Wolfgang Puck opened Spago in the Forum Shops in Caesars Palace and proved to us … that people will line up to get good food.” — Steve Wynn
