Parties, beautiful women and lots of stars — not only at the 77th Academy Awards, but here on Oahu as well. Actor Sean Penn was vacationing at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hotel, but he must’ve dashed off to L.A. the day before the Oscars because he was spotted at the hotel on Friday, then looking incredibly rested and tan Sunday night at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. I actually cried when he presented the award for best actress to Hilary Swank for her role in Million Dollar Baby. “I’m just a girl from a trailer park with a dream,” she told millions of viewers and a theater full of her peers. A producer who coached her in acting discovered Hilary when she was 9. But Hilary is a true athlete. She competed in the Junior Olympics and Washington state championships in swimming, and was ranked fifth in her state for gymnastics. Her athletic background probably helped her win a second Oscar for the female boxer who wouldn’t quit. But she still had to gain 20 pounds of muscle mass for the role … Random info: At one time, Swank and her mother were so broke they lived out of their car. When she finally landed the lead in Boys Don’t Cry (1999, her first Academy Award), she earned just $75/day. I love Swank. She’s passionate and real. We’ve all felt like “a nobody” at some point in our lives, but Swank proved with a vision, talent and the courage to move forward — anything is possible … Here at home, more special women are living their dreams.
The new O-Lounge AGN Girlie Revue dancers - The Blonde,
The Star, The Diva, costume designer Malia Damos, The
Brunette, The Bitch and The Baby are making Saturday
The O-Lounge’s new Saturday night AGN Girlie Review is off the ground and attracting the 30+ crowd rather than its usual Friday night demo (21-35). Six cabaret dancers do hourly routines to songs like All that Jazz and Nasty Girl. They have four to five costume changes a night, and with all that dancing, I can see how they get away with eating chicken wings and ribs and still stay a size 2. (I just about died when I saw the trays of food in their dressing room!) Malia Damos designs all their costumes, complete with glitter and fishnets. Once they take the stage, they instantly capture the crowd’s attention. Kristin Alesna aka “The Blonde,” Wendy Calio “The Star”/lead dancer, Sherry Chock Wong “The Diva,” Shana Dragomanoviett “The Brunette,” little sister Shanelle Dragomanoviett “The Bitch” and Sondra Tory “The Baby” perform every Saturday night. “It’s really fun,” says cocktail waitress Alana Kobayashi.
