Parties, kisses and birthday wishes — Hot 93.9FM’s Gregg Hammer just celebrated another coming-of-age. We won’t say just what that age is … but like wine — he gets better every year! …While Gregg celebrated Hawaii Kai, a group of skydivers celebrated their b-days Mokule`ia.

They planned group jump, but the winds were high, so they stayed on terra firma and made a bonfire on the beach instead. Kelsey Mizeur (27), Tera Anderson (22), Emma Webb (23), Brandon Smith (20), Jed Johnson (28) and Holly Pugh (25) all have their b-days within one week each other … weird. But the fun ended for Kelsey when a speeding car near Dillingham Airfield hit his Rottweiler/shepherd mix “Floppy.” He raced the dog the nearest emergency vet (that was in Waipahu). Luckily, no broken bones. “Because he’s big, tough, strong dog,” said Kelsey proudly. But the mutt did have to spend the night at the animal ER and cost his “dad” about $900. When Kelsey came up short of cash, his friends pitched in and helped pay the bill. They say, “dog is man’s best friend,” but human friends are pretty great too …

Executive chef Barney, Daniel Torres, Chris Hemmeter Jr., Kenwei
Chong, Mike Hadley and MichahBroude celebrate the opening of
E&O Trading Company at Ward Centre

Three local boys launched E&O Trading Company in Ward Centre last week. This is the fourth Eurasian restaurant for general partners Kenwei Chong, Chris Hemmeter Jr. and Rodney Loo. They already own three in the Bay Area and plan to open a fifth on Maui. Kenwei is a Punahou grad (’86) and fellow BU alumnus (’90 SMG)! “We must be twins!” I squealed. Although I graduated a few years after Kenwei, we both moved to NYC after college. He managed mutual funds and I managed to dig myself into a hole of debt. More than a decade later, we’re both back home. He’s now out of mutual funds and into the restaurant biz (and I’m still in debt). I felt a kindred connection with him instantly. “Why’d you come back home?” I ask. “So our kids could grow up here,” he says. “But why the change into the restaurant business?” “I didn’t want to commit to 80-hour work weeks,” he responds. I need to take lessons from Kenwei. Lots of movers and shakers at the grand opening Thursday night. Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ regional director of communications David Uchiyama, Tau Harrington of Harrington Sports Marketing, Dean Maeva (coach David Maeva’s older brother), Jon Bryan of Nothing But Results and Dr. Gary Kondo of Hawaii Family Dental Centers are just a few … Kondo has hired Juliet Lighter as the new director of marketing & internal communications for HFDC. A change of pace for the model/actress, but she’s been looking to break into public relations and says she’s ready to step out of the spotlight and into the corporate world. “PR’s what I want to do,” she tells me … She and photographer Russell Tanoue were among the VIPs at the MidWeek-The Weekend’s launch party at Zanzabar. The place was packed with local celebrities! I’ve never seen so many in one room! My favorite fine arts photographer Kim Taylor Reece was there with his wife, Kanoe. American Idol-ist Jordan Segundo came with his manager Nancy Bernal. Literally hundreds of loyal MidWeekers attended to celebrate the weekend edition, and it would be injustice if I were to try to name them all! Poster-size MidWeek covers lined the stairway to main floor. Guests were given MidWeek-The Weekend pen night light keychain at the registration table. Check out Pa` on pages 24-25 for the fabulous photos … On a quieter note, wrote about Spc. Mary Simms last year, a remarkable woman who left her family to serve one-year deployment Afghanistan. It’s been 11 months and Simms is finally home. Her husband Jacob Unger bought her a Le Mana Perles necklace to match the silver Audi T. Roadster convertible he bought her while she was away. Now that’s a great husband! They spent their first weekend back together at the Hyatt Regency, dining on honey-walnut shrimp spicy Mongolian beef at Chao Mein. “Incredible!”
