Thursday’s ‘Episode III’ debut

THE DAY has come and the Dark Side is upon us — Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of the Sith opened Thursday night (well, Friday morning) at 12:01 at Consolidated Theaters at Ward and Signature Theaters at Dole Cannery. Jason Tayros recently returned from an international Star Wars Convention in Indianapolis. “I was surrounded by Star Wars geeks and I loved it,” says Tayros, 35. More than 30,000 fellow fans from around the world met to celebrate George Lucas’ final film of the series. Tayros says he even met his Princess Leah, but didn’t want to give her real name. Tayros is also a huge Kikaida fan. He once waited in line for hours to have his personalized Kikaida license plate signed by the Japanese action hero …

IN WAIKIKI, hundreds got a sneak peek of DreamWorks’new animated pic Madagascar last weekend at Sunset on the Beach. Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith voice the cartoon, which opens nationwide May 27 … CLINT EASTWOOD’s latest directing project, Flags of Our Fathers, won’t be heading to Hawaii as hoped. Too bad, because this will be an all-star production. Oscar nominee Paul Haggins (Million Dollar Baby) wrote the screenplay, which is being produced by Steven Spielberg. The WWII film is based on the book written by James Bradley, son of one of the six soldiers who placed the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima. Eastwood wants large, black sand beaches and he found them in Iceland …

John Cruz performed with Jack Johnson
for more than 25,000 fans at the Jazz and
Heritage Festival in New Orleans (Jazzfest) 2005

THE SLACK-KEY Grammywinning album is getting a lot of slack from the community, but John Cruz has been blazing since the awards ceremony. Cruz performed alongside Jack Johnson for more than 25,000 fans at The Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans (Jazzfest) 2005! Johnson brought Cruz onstage halfway through his own performance and introduced Cruz as a “legend in Hawaii.”Then the two blazed into a stirring rendition of Island Style. Jazz fans from all over the world roared their approval! Cruz crammed 10 performances into seven days — madness. Cruz said he couldn’t even get to B.B. King’s stage to catch the end of his set due to the hordes of fans who stopped to talk to him. Within a week, Cruz had made a name not only for himself, but also for Hawaiian music … If you haven’t heard of ALO yet, you will. The band is opening for all of Jack Johnson’s shows this summer. Front-man Zack Gill asked Cruz to play with them as well, so he did — at the Lounge Lizard and Café Brasil. For pics and more info on Cruz, checkout

birthday at E&O Trading Co. (from left) Mike Pape,

birthday boy Kolodny and John Henderson

LOCAL PARTIES — “We’re the last real men of Kailua,” laughed Dr. Tom Spheeris at Drew Kolodny’s (Starwood Vacation Ownership) 30th b-day party at E&O Trading Co. He was just kidding, of course, but these guys say there’s nothing wrong with being “metrosexual.” They’re young, handsome, well-dressed; they groom, use Dove soap and even accessorize. But like all guys, when they get together, they’re simply … boys. Personal trainer and socialite Mossimo Galluzzo, pharmaceutical sales rep Mike Pape, pilot Rob Trauger and Hawaii Race Adventure founder and ultratriathlete John Henderson attended the intimate birthday party in E&O’s private dining room …

IN SPORTS, Michelle Wie won’t play in the men’s U.S. Open this year … but she came darn close to making it to the qualifier. My guess is by the time she’s a sophomore in college, she’ll dominate … Turtle Bay’s director of golf Matt Hall has been busy with tournaments this spring, but says the resort’s next big event is the Honu Festival in mid-June …

LANAI AND AUGIE did it again — two sold out shows at the Radisson Prince Kuhio on Mother’s Day. Now that’s how to show Mom you love her — take her to see these two. Oh goodness! I actually took my grandma a couple years ago. She absolutely loved it! If you didn’t make it Mother’s Day, try Brew Moon Wednesday nights …

COMING UP — Moody Eva (formerly known as Evillynam Crew) is returning to Hawaii after five years in San Francisco. The House music DJ queen has her own label (Good Beats/Big Popsicle), but still travels the world hitting the house music circuit.
