Miss Hawaii 2004 Olena Rubin (left),
who will crown the new Miss Hawaii
June 10, and Miss Hawaii 1978
Elizabeth Lindsey went on a tour of
China together representing Hawaii

LOVED seeing MidWeek’s Yu Shing Ting on the cover of last week’s issue surfing Da`FlowRider at Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park. But we all don’t have bikini bods like Yu Shing. If you’re not into surfing, there’s another way to accomplish a slim and strong physique while having fun. Body Balance Centre is hidden above Supercuts on Ward Avenue. Husband-and wife team Maria Torcia and Rick Burke train clients using Stott Pilates. Classes are limited to five people, so you get a lot of personal attention. “I lost 11 pounds since January,” raved one high-profile client. “I never dreamed I’d have abs. I just thought I wasn’t born with that kind of body,” she told me. Now her stomach is tight and lean and she tans in a thong. For me, the “girltime” was almost as valuable as the workout. “Ahhh, it hurts, but it feels so good,” moaned the woman on the reformer next to me. I burst out laughing! “You get the big ball,” said Rick to another client. He was talking about stability balls. What a workout. My core burned for the rest of the day. At $26/class, it’s a great alternative to personal training, which runs $50-$100/session. For more info, log onto www.bodyhawaii.com … I honestly haven’t laughed as much in a single hour since my days with Rory Wild & the Wakeup Crew on Hot 93.9 … Rory and I used to do 30 pushups an hour on the hour to get into shape. A futile attempt, but we tried. Show producer Krey-Z Oshiro did as many as he could. (He started with three and worked his way up to 20+). Gregg Hammer just made fun of us. He was still on that Calo-gel stuff … Speaking of the Hammers … Happy B-day Shawnee. Gregg’s wife and co-morning show personality celebrated with her favorite foods: Zippy’s fried chicken and Libby’s manapua, compliments of Krey-Z …

IT’S A small world — Miss Hawaii 2004 Olena Rubin was once an account executive for Hot 93.9. That was just a couple years ago. Now, she travels the world representing Hawaii. She traveled with Elizabeth Lindsey, Miss Hawaii 1978, on her first international tour (to China). Nearly a year later, Rubin will relinquish her crown to her successor, just as Lindsey did nearly three decades ago. Rubin recently shot a segment for the upcoming pageant’s live broadcast at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. “It has been unforgettable,” she said. “I feel like I’ve accomplished everything I’ve set out to do. It’s time to begin a new chapter in my life.” She’s always been ambitious and no doubt she’ll accomplish whatever she puts her mind to next … The pageant is June 10 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom …

AND HILTON heiress Paris is heading to Hawaii. The Simple Life 4 is scheduled to shoot in the islands; the question is … will her best bud be former co-star Nicole Richie or Paris’ new best friend Kimberly Stewart (singer Rod Stewart’s daughter)? The network has offered Hilton $100,000 per episode to make up with Richie so they can learn a little aloha together. Can you imagine going to L&L for a plate lunch and seeing Paris Hilton behind the counter? Or maybe the city will hire her to feed the pigeons. According to her fan website, Hilton almost got whopped with a $95 fine for feeding pigeons in London, where it’s banned. But the avid animal lover loves feeding birds. I can see the pigeons lining up along Waikiki Beach already … By the way, her little sister Nicky is going to be a bridesmaid in her “ex” best friend’s (Richie) wedding (to Adam Goldstein) … These two have a long way to go before making up …

Duane “Dog” Chapman shot part of his series in the back of HPD headquarters a couple weeks ago — at the bail and receiving area … Maybe he was bringing in Bryan Blair, a notorious burglar from Kona he tracked all the way to Kansas City. The Dog is so big now, he even has his own line of clothing. Dog-mania! “Dog” T-shirts, pajamas and even underwear are available through his website. For autographed pics, send a selfaddressed stamped envelope to “Dog,” PO Box 22537, Hon. HI 96823 …

NORTH SHORE star Jason Momoa is in Vancouver shooting his latest project Stargate: Atlantis — a spinoff of the original series … HFD wants women who can handle the heat. The fire department is holding a workshop for women seeking a firefighting career. Saturday, June 11 at 7:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. Call 527-5571 or log onto www4.honolulu.gov/cityhallonline to reserve your spot …

ANOTHER way to be a hero is to attend a benefit to help save 5-month-old Elijah Tanna’s eyes. The older of twin boys has aphakic glaucoma along with a long list of health problems. His doctors say he needs surgery and it can’t be done here. The Tanna family is holding a fundraiser Monday at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. Simplicity and other local bands will perform. Tickets are $25, available at the Blaisdell Box Office and Ticketmaster…

IT’S NOT the Grammys, but all styles of Hawaiian music will be represented at the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards June 3. The Brothers Cazimero, Raiatea Helm and ‘A‘lea have seven nominations each. I’ll be hanging out in the “Green Room” getting winners’ reactions for the 7:30 p.m. live broadcast on K-5 …
