Melisa and Drew celebrate their engagement
with a bang on Lanai

IT’S a battle between being the week of love and romance ... or the week of the Scion - UH film student Chrystal Jameson is off to Australia to work alongside film producer Chris Lee on the lat- est Superman film. Jameson won her summer internship in Sydney by creating a new TV commercial for Scion. The new automobile is heavily marketing to young, college-age car buyers. If a minivan mated with a hearse - Scion would be the result. They aren’t pretty, but Scion is hitting the scene hard to convince young drivers they are trendy. Jameson beat two of her other classmates for the Australian internship in Anne Misawa ‘s Advanced Cinematic & Digital Production course at the Academy for Creative Media (ACM). Graduate student Gabe Hoeffken and freshman Thomas Takemoto-Chock also premiered their commercials red-carpet style at an invite-only screening at the O-Lounge. Scion also co- sponsored the screening of DVS’s SKATEMORE on the pavilion of the Hard Rock Cafe Memorial Day weekend and gave away three i-Pods (20 gig, Mini, Shuffle). Kavet the Katalyst hosted the premiere with tunes by Nocturnal Sound Krew . DVS skate pros Chico Brenes , Kerry Getz , Mike Taylor , Jerome Rogers , Torey Pudwill and Zered Bassett signed autographs for fans at the all ages event -a Vertical Junkies (Russ Inouye and Madskill production). And Scion held it’s first “Lowriders Supershow” at the Hawaii Raceway Park, where 60-plus lowriders competed in sound-offs and “hopper” contests. There was even a bikini contest. Scion seems to be working extra hard to make this car look cool ...

NEWS 8 anchor Jodi Leong will be playing “Diana Morales” in A Chorus Line set to open July 22 at the Ronald E. Bright Theatre in Kaneohe. This show marks the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Ron Bright Theatre (formerly Castle Theatre). “This production is blending those of us who grew up in this theatre years ago with the younger generation of performers,” said Leong, as if she’s sooold! I’d hardly call 30-something old. True to her astrological sign, this Lioness (Leo) is a true performer. She loves theater, and she’s one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met. A lot of people wonder about the people they see on TV - what are they really like? Are they fak- ing for the camera? Are they bossy, snobby, friendly or sincere? Let me assure you, Jodi is gen- uine, compassionate, smart and a good friend ... and that’s hard to say about most people in show biz ...

ALSO performing in A Chorus Line: Castle alumni John Bryan as “Richie,” Tony Young as “Mike” and Jade Stice as “Cassie.” Ron Bright is direct- ing. John Bryan is also the musical director, and choreog- raphy is by Marcelo Pacleb ...

MAI TAI bartender Jen Roberts celebrated her b-day (May 23) with a trip to Vegas. After celebrating, she’s back to work trying to get into the HFD recruit program. Roberts has been at it for nearly a year. Let’s wish her luck ...

G-SPOT threw a huge party here (“Midnight Mele”) at the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park Sunday night. B.E.T. , Kapena , Koa‘uka and Kutmaster Spaz played on two stages; DJ Quiksilva (San Diego), Sovern T. , Cronkite , IKON and Big Daddy Dave hit the turntables for those wanting dancehall, house and hip-hop. Ezekiel gave out free T-shirts to the first 500 through the gates. Dave Boehne , Charlie Carroll , Ross Williams , Pete Labradore , Chris Satterfield and Luke Walsh rode the new FlowRider ride ...

NATUROPATHIC physician and acupuncturist Dr. Laurie Steelsmith released her new book, Natural Choices for Women’s Health: How the secrets of natural Chinese medicine can create a lifetime of wellness. Steelsmith signed copies of the to-be-released book at a private party at the Bayer Estate. Random House published the 416-page book, which has received rave reviews, including one from the author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom, Dr. Christiane Northrup . (A book I believe is essential reading for all women.) Natural Choiceswas released at bookstores statewide May 24 ...

I AM in love with Lanai. Not Island 98.5’s “Lanai” Tabura - but the island of Lanai. I can see why Bill Gates chose to get mar- ried there and why David Murdoch decided to buy the island. Lanai is pure romance. It’s perfect for weddings, anniversaries and ... engagements ... Personal trainer Kimo Kockelman and wife Diane celebrated their anniversary at The Lodge at Koele. They were seen stocking up on goodies at the store in town, bev- erages and snacks so they could stay in their cozy room at the Lodge. These lovebirds seemed to be in pure bliss just being together ... Another young cou- ple celebrated one year of wed- lock at The Lodge. “The first year is easy,” said Rob Alson (co- founder HeavyWater Magazine) about his marriage to wife Amy . They stayed at the Lodge, but spent their days next to the pool at Manele Bay. Amy recently co- founded SMART magazine, which has already been picked up by Anderson News ...

IT’S no secret KHNL and K5 GM John Fink is an avid sports fan. He collects everything from football helmets to hockey pucks. And he golfs. The staff at The Experience at Koele say he’s pret- ty good. But his son David is bet- ter. “His son is a very good golfer,” says golf-starter Guy Kaukeano. David is 14 years old and shot a 78 from the champi- on tees at Koele (with a 2 hand- icap). What an awesome Father’s Day gift! ... Roy Enomoto and Dwight Kikuta are diehard skeet shooters and members of the Lanai Pine League. Staff say Enomoto flies over in a private plane. Famed skeet shooters include Magnum P.I. Tom Selleck , California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger , Robert Stack ( Unsolved Mysteries) and Dan Cooke (TV & radio broadcast- er). Their photos hang on the wall of fame. Shooting instructor Mark Alboro handed me a 28- gauge and I was hooked. My favorite target is “the rolling rab- bit.” The target rolls across the dirt at high speeds. If you hit the disc, it shatters and the pieces fly in all directions. Then dozens of monarch butterflies gather around remains, as if to say goodbye ... or possibly hello. It was a perfect way to celebrate my engagement to my college sweetheart ...
