Birthday babies — MidWeek columnist Katie Young celebrated her big day with boyfriend “Sebastian” and friends like KHNL morning show anchor Joann Shin, Shin’s boyfriend Mike Cordeiro (former trainer at the Honolulu Club and newly enrolled UH medical student), SKYLINE promoter Flash Hansen, Hanohano Room GM Keith Mallini, gal pals Seilee Nakamura, Sherrie Niizuma, Lezlie Yamauchi and the Hanohano Room’s executive sous chef Ron Amasol. “Chef Ron is my favorite all-time chef,” says Katie. “We’re stuffed after all the delicious food!” She still managed to fit in a couple bites of dessert — chocolate lava cake and strawberries Romanoff. Katie wore a sexy turquoise halter dress from Bebe which she’d been saving for the special night. She looked fabulous … Chef Amasol is a steak connoisseur. He once flew to Tampa, Fla., because he’d heard about a steak house with amazing aged beef. He says he makes an excellent aged New York Steak at the Hanohano Room (must be ordered “very, very rare.”) He says aged meat loses about 70 percent of its moisture, so cooking it medium rare can make it tough …

I met two young angels lastweek. Christina O’Conner and Heather Nakahara came to my rescue when my car died in a dark parking lot late at night. My cell died along with my car and a man stood nearby watching me. He moved closer and started talking to me. Normally, I would have appreciated the company, but instead I felt prickly. He was strange and I didn’t feel safe. That’s when my angels pulled up in a cherry red VW bug and asked, “Do you need some help? We can hang around with you.” “Oh gosh no,” I said, “It could be 45 minutes.” “That’s OK,” they said sweetly, “We don’t have anything to do.” These high school girls showed more compassion, concern and pro-activeness than most adults I know. Thank you Christina and Heather … Helping others: The ALL BOOKS FOR CHILDREN book drive Aug. 15- 31 at Starbucks stores on all islands.
