Salon Picasso: Deo Florentin,
Justin Lumin and Joanne Jun
The surf is up on Makaha Beach - Ross Thomas (Kate Thomas’ brother) is filming MTV’s series about surfers Boarding School. The 22-episode series started filming earlier this month. Funny, when NBC yanked Hawaii, Ross’ sister left Hawaii and moved to L.A. Now he’s left L.A. and is in Hawaii. Co-creator Sean McNamara says the show is for MTV’s new N Network (for the Y/Z generation). Local boy Jason Tam stars in the soon-to-be hit series. He graduated from NYU’s Tische School of Performing Arts in December and has been traveling the country performing ever since. He played “Arpad” in She Loves Me in Minneapolis, “Baby John” in West Side Story in Sacramento, and had a role in The King and I. Now he’s one of the three male leads in Boarding School. Hawaii’s favorite waterman Brian Keaulana is the show’s consultant ... ANOTHER surfer is also making people look good. Deo Florentin is a rare breed of hairstylist. Besides giving women fabulous highlights, he’s straight, a total surfer, never cuts his hair and he’s in a rock band! Velocity Burns practices at Salon Picasso after hours. The band doesn’t mind carrying the drums up a flight of stairs to the second floor - as long as they have a place to jam. “There’s not much of a market now for heavy metal/rock,” says Deo. Once there is, he says, he hopes Velocity Burns gets some gigs. Salon owner Joanne Jun left Paul Brown to open her own shop located next to Altres on Kapiolani. Deo and Justin Lumin followed ...
MORE SURF stuff - six-time world champion Kelly Slater attended a wedding for a pair of pooches! Ex-girlfriend Pamela Anderson threw a small wedding for her Chihuahua and golden retriever. The canines tied the knot in front of 20 guests on Malibu Beach ... FOR GIRLS only - Benefit at Kahala Mall (inside Macy’s) is having a makeup party Saturday (Oct. 1) 11 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Make an appointment for a half-hour makeup session and receive a goody bag of samples and a chance to win more ... Macy’s is also having some super specials for MidWeek-the Weekend readers only - so be on the lookout ... FOR GUYS only - random stats according to Best Life and Glamour magazines: 92 percent of male managers have lusted after a female coworker; 57 percent of women have fantasized about an older male colleague; 40 percent of men say they’ve fought with their wives over an attractive female co-worker; 81 percent of women have been “creeped out” by an older male co-worker who flirts with them ...
A BETTER way to get a girl might be to take her on the Star of Honolulu, which is launching a new seven-course menu for fall. Executive chef Eric Omick and executive sous chef Richard Franco created specials like butternut squash soup with Granny Smith apple and cilantro cream, a phyllo basket of micro greens with seared ahi and Kamuela tomato vegetable terrine, and that’s just two of the seven courses! October through December only ... PIPELINE Cafe is bringing in a slew of hip-hop and R&B performers. Common rocked a full house at Pipeline on Sunday. Owner Chip Jewitt was spotted enjoying the show. The R&B star’s album Be is getting raves along with his new video Go. The Star-Bulletin‘s Jason Genagabus was there too ... And when Pipeline announced De la Soul is coming to Hawaii Nov. 12, the crowd screamed ... Another scream for adult film star and former Penthouse Pet Teanna Kai, who will host Pipeline’s Beach Party Oct. 22. Too bad for rapper Talib Kweli, who was scheduled to hit the stage that night. His show was cancelled, but I’m sure the fellas won’t mind Teanna as their hostess instead ...
