Pink CD

What started as a simple statement about making an album to support breast cancer at a Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation board meeting last year has resulted in a statewide effort by some of the top names in Hawaii’s music industry.

Spearheaded by Karey Oura, MMCF board member and owner of Island Soul Entertainment, the recently released Pink CD is truly a labor of love by all who touched it. Names such as Na Waiho’olu’u O Ke Anuenue, Lehua Kalima Heine,Willie K, Melveen Leed, Nina Keali’iwahamana, Namahana and Paula Fuga collaborated on the creation and production of this inspirational album.

“When the idea came about, I just sent out one big e-mail blast, and these are the artists that accepted the invitation,” says Oura.“It seemed to me that everyone who responded had a story and a reason why they wanted to participate and help out. Everyone is affected by cancer, but these artists really felt a call to action.”

Because the artists, the producers and everyone involved in creating the album were so proactive, the album took just a little over two months to record. Some flew to Maui to record at Oura’s studio and others used their own studios to complete their projects.

“I look at this as a gift from the heart - everyone coming together to share a message using their special talents,” says Lani Correa, executive director of MMMC Foundation.“It was very emotional to see these artists’ commitment and belief of how important this CD could become.”

Oura adds,“To pull the music community together and come together for a common cause is so special. These artists and musicians donated their time, their talent, and I cannot stress enough how overwhelming it was to see that sort of generosity.”

The song list includes: Summer Day by Dani Waring, Love Pacheco and Lahela Rapozo, When I Need You by Na Waiho’olu’u O Ke Anuenue, Try A Little Tenderness by Lehua Kalima Heine and Willie K, Time Passes By by The Girlas, You’ll Never Walk Alone by Melveen Leed, Someone To Watch Over Me by Lehua Kalima Heine, Sentimental Reasons by Kaena Brown and Ikaika Brown, The Very Thought Of You by Nina Keali’iwahamana, Trust Me by Pomai Williams, By Your Side by Namahana, Thought Of You by Paula Fuga and Maui Medley by Willie K and Alakai Paleka.

“The album has a very relaxing, mellow and positive feel,” says Oura. “It takes you on a bit of a musical vacation. It’s very much Hawaii in that if you listen to the album it’s beautiful and the temperature is perfect.”

Proceeds from sales of Pink will benefit MMMC Foundation for the purpose of breast cancer education and awareness.

“What we have been doing for the past 18 months is doing a lot of community outreach programs to heighten the awareness of breast cancer,” says Correa. “Our plan is to use the funds to take it into the rural areas and go in and do breast screenings. That’s what we really want to target.”
