Bobby Gouveia’s ’97 GMC Sierra Stepside
Del.icio.usBobby Gouveia was 8 years old when he made his first trip to Hawaii Raceway Park, which was when he became a car enthusiast. He began building model cars and sometimes using three model cars to make one custom model car.
“I was out of high school when I got my first car,” says Gouveia. “But during my high school years, I had all kinds of ideas of what I was going to do to the car when I did get one. First I got a Toyota Celica that I built and sold, then I got into Corollas, which led into what I have now.”
Japanese four-cylinders were the fad during the 1980s, and Gouveia built a 14-second Corolla before buying a 1967 Chevy Nova SS. Since then, he hasn’t missed the shoyu burners of decades past one bit.
“I bought the Nova from this guy in Ewa Beach, Bobby Jones, who built the car,” says Gouveia. “I had it for eight years before selling it because I was in a bind. I bought the car for $5,000 and sold it for $2,500. That was wrong of me to sell the car. It was worth $14,000. I wish I hadn’t sold it.”
Today Gouveia has this GMC truck, a full-race Nova, a semi-pro street Cutlass Supreme and is currently restoring another Nova for the street. He’s definitely made up for the loss.
