John “Boogie” Bugarin - ‘78 Chevrolet Camaro
This ride was the first car John “Boogie” Bugarin bought when he got his driver’s license while attending Damien Memorial School. With no formal training in automotive technology, Bugarin taught himself how to wrench on this car through research and reading.
“I’m fortunate to have customers who loan me their cars for a month so I can display them here in the store,“says Ian “Yoshi"Yoshizawa, manager of Ron’s Performance Center.“John’s been a loyal customer for many years, and he has built that car by himself. John’s the type who reads, gets tips and goes to shows and gets ideas. He’s built the motor, overhauled the transmission and shortened the rear end. That’s impressive.”
When Bugarin began building his first engine,it was during the days when piston rings did not come pre-fitted. He had to file each ring down to specs on an engine that had been bored .030. The allowable tolerance for error is very small, so if the clearance was off, it could cause engine failure. “I bought this car from a Japanese man who lived in the Kinau Street area,“says Bugarin.“It was in bad shape when I got it - faded factory maroon paint, 305 two barrel, the interior was shot.Basically everything was shot. For a thousand bucks, I was happy.”
Bugarin plans on putting EFI injectors and a stand-alone computer on this already radical pro street ride.Nutz!
