For some, a trip to Waikiki is not complete without a view of the beach.

For others?

Well, depending on what you order at one of the newest restaurants on Lewers Street, your view may be of one of the best steaks in town. Scorching platters of succulent steaks are set to sizzle in Waikiki next week as the newest Ruth’s Chris Steak House opens for business.

“The restaurant is absolutely beautiful,” says Alex Kirley, regional director of sales and marketing. “There’s tropical décor, and a definite Hawaiiana feel, and we’ve maintained the steak house elegance and appeal.”

The “new look” Ruth’s Chris incorporates the classic feel of a steak house with contemporary Hawaiian design. Mauna Lani Ruth’s Chris, opened in October of 2006, is one of the most beautiful restaurants in the Islands, and has set the design tone for Waikiki. The dining rooms look as if they belong in a luxurious tropical retreat - different in many ways from the other Ruth’s Chris Steak Houses across the nation.

As Paul Ah Cook, director of operations for Desert Island Restaurants, famously once told me, “Hey, man, it’s Hawaii.”

Executive Chef Nawaii Keko’olani agrees.

“We have different items on the menu in Hawaii,” he says. “We like to use fresh fish and create dishes that make people feel like they’re in Hawaii when they’re here.”

And this is the only Ruth’s Chris where you’ll find fish specials, sashimi and the occasional locally inspired dish on the menu.

One of the features of the new Ruth’s Chris is the bar, which seems set to become one of the new hot spots of 2007.

“There are 23 seats at the bar,” says Alex, (Restaurant Row, by comparison, has only 10) “and guests can order pupu and drinks there, or order from the full menu.”

If you’ve never done dinner at the bar at Ruth’s Chris, trust me, it’s a fabulous experience. A glass of good red wine and a sizzling steak never tasted better than here, in the company of excellent bartenders and waiters who anticipate your needs.

Ruth’s Chris has free validated parking in the Waikiki Beach Walk parking lot. Private parties, corporate meetings and business lunches will all be a feature of the new Ruth’s Chris, where set menus make planning easy.

And while tourists in Waikiki may initially make up the majority of the Ruth’s Chris restaurant base, Alex and the team hope to see kamaaina show up every night.

“It’s hard to say who will make up the highest percentage of guests,” she says “but we’d like to think that residents of Waikiki and surrounding areas will make this their local restaurant.”

Paul Ah Cook, who will act as general manager of the new restaurant during the opening weeks, is confident that both locals and tourists will love the new location. With the stellar reputation for service that Ruth’s Chris has earned over almost two decades in Honolulu, it’s safe to say that the restaurant will be one of the busiest on the beach walk.
