Breakfast at A Taste Of New York Deli And Market
features Portugeuse sausage, rice and eggs

You may have heard a few different descriptions of A Taste of New York Deli And Market. You will have, I’m sure, heard people talk about their amazing cheesecake (5 inches high, sugar cookie crusted slice of heavenly homemade genuine NYC pie) and you may even have heard a word or two about the deli sandwiches that are so big they carry almost a pound of meat per sandwich. But have you heard of the cream cheese stuffed French toast, the Portuguese sausage breakfast and the incredible skillet?

Read on.

“We opened for breakfast a couple of months ago,” says Michele Acedo, who, with her husband Sonny, owns the deli,“and the people who’ve found us are enjoying the food - the response has been really good.” The response to the best selling dish on the menu has been huge. It’s the breakfast skillet, and it consists of breakfast potatoes (a delicious blend of homemade diced, fried potatoes mixed with onion, celery and seasoning) which are then mixed with a choice of meats from the deli, added to cheese and then topped with a couple of eggs.“It’s really popular,” says Michele with a grin.

There’s also a hearty Irish oatmeal if you want to get your day off to a slightly healthier start, and there are a selection of traditional breakfast dishes including delicious lox and bagel. You can grab a fruit plate here too, if you like, but let’s face it, if you’re in the deli for breakfast, you’re most likely there because you want some meat. Take your pick. You can mix and match almost anything from the deli counter with your eggs. That means anything in your omelet from corned beef or hot pastrami and Muenster cheese to turkey and Swiss with a side of ham. Not, in other words, a breakfast to grab and go. “Not exactly,” laughs Michele. “We don’t really have that kind of a crowd. Mostly people want to come and try the skillet and the omelets, and now we’ve also added a Portuguese sausage and rice plate.” Not really the kind of early morning food you want to be rushing through. In truth, you need about an hour to digest it all. I took my dad the other morning (a man with firm Irish roots and a fearsome appetite) and he raved about the skillet breakfast. He also didn’t seem to have room for lunch or much to eat the rest of the day.

If a hearty start to the day is what you’re looking for,or if you’re someone who firmly believes that one should breakfast like a king, then head over to Kaimuki the next time you feel like home cooked potatoes and sweet and creamy French toast. And when you’re done, don’t forget a slice of that 5-inch high cheesecake for dessert.
